I've literally been unable to find a video if anyone actually doing this jump. The internet told them there was a shortcut so they don't even try.

What other skills are lost to time?

Finishing Life Force (NES) without dying or cheating. Yes, after tons of practice, I was able to not die in that game, as well as at the end too with all the walls. You have to be fast and memorize as well.

What do you mean by that? I see it as one of the game's best challenges because it tests your timing and skill in a good way, as opposed to the machine which is just memorizing. I don't think they should have put the shortcut in.

DKC1, there's an offscreen barrel you can shoot to in Snow Barrel Blast that lets you bypass the final section. I did a 2-player contest with my friend once and he got up to get food while I did a perfect run of that level. He got fucked endlessly on it and then accidentally shot himself into that "skip" barrel. He wouldn't believe me when I told him I did it legit.

I actually found out about it on my own near the beginning of the game, after doing it by accident.
I was playing Megaman X extensively prior to that, and my first thought was "did I just fucking walljumped?" After that I experimented and figured out how to do that consistently.
And much later I found the critters that show it to you.

They are lost arts because they just abandon the game at first difficulty. The idea that you run out of 1ups and have to restart from scratch is just foreign to them.

-Zelda 1, imagine having the patience to bomb/candle every bush and wall in the game today without cheating.

-Megaman 1 and 2 just having the feathered touch of a timed jumps in most stages are impossible for most kids today.

I wouldn't call it a challenge, because I think it's actually impossible now. But in Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny there was this little place across a body of water with a flashing light that I spend countless hours trying to get to. I was convinced there was a secret way of getting to it, but I suspect the devs were just fucking with me.
It's too obscure a game to find anybody else who can relate. I still want to get there to this day.

The manual is important, it's not just a "Here are the controls", manuals were much more comprehensive due to multiple combinations of tech limits and poor design making even simple tasks very awkward in some games.

Do you think Dark Souls's difficulty is because the tutorial is "Here's the controls, go nuts"? It's not, it's because it's deliberately designed to reward bravery, but punish cowardice and recklessness, which was found throughout the NES era.

Digital rereleases come with digital manuals, though. Wii had it, PS3 had it, 3DS had it, Wii U had an online manual you could access either on console or on PC, really good scans on that one. They also rereleased an HQ scan of the Earthbound Nintendo Power when they released said game.

>-Zelda 1, imagine having the patience to bomb/candle every bush and wall in the game today without cheating.

That's bullshit dude, most of the secrets in Zelda 1 were there just so they could sell more Nintendo magazines and help line minutes. Also the game's manual has some top tips as well.
