I've heard both fan remakes and the official one from the DS version, yet none of them properly capture the raw despair conveyed in the original 8 bit version.

Gameboy rendition of the NES rendition of the Blues Brothers' rendition of the Peter Gunn theme

The OST is part of the reason why I prefer the NES version. I almost barfed when I heard that horrendous Tower theme rendition on the DS version.

Really, I feel that this was the last great DQ OST. When the SNES came out and was able to produce orchestrated sounds, that was when DQ music died. Everything after DQIV just sounded the same in that series outside of the GBC games - which, again sounded good because it didn't have that samey orchestra sound due to limitations.

8's North American version soundtrack was pretty good because it was an actual orchestra performing it.

Dude I just discovered how amazing this song was yesterday and spent an hour listening to covers on YouTube. Goosebumps for real. Gonna learn it on piano and if I have the motivation arrange it in a way I like as none of the covers really did it for me (too much metal bs) but there are some great ideas out there.

I much prefer how much emphasis there is on the trumpets in the SNES version. To me, it's always sounded a frog hopping along to a march which really suited the character. In the OST version, they fade into the background.

Donkey Kong '94 on Game Boy, theme for the penultimate boss fight. The fight is so easy that most people only get to hear the first few bars and never actually hear the full track, but it's pretty incredible, especially when you consider it's just a 4 voice system.

That part at around 1:12 is only on this version and it's great. I also actually like the instrumentation better despite being low bitrate samples.
