5302403 No.5302403 [Reply] [Original]

Daily reminder Run n Guns are superior to shumps in every way. Actually adding platforming elements and player control over progression is more technically complex, challenging, and fun than some generic autoscrolling 'hold B to shoot' snoozefest.

No wonder games like Contra and SNK are so much more loved these days, their challenge and originality has stood the test of time that shumps failed.

>> No.5302407

Player control over progression is the big reason why I like them more. Even top-down run 'n gun games without platforming are a blast. Commando is one of my favorite games of all time.

>> No.5302408

Run-fast-n-blasts like Contra are not as good as stand-still-n-kills like Shinobi

The best part of Contra 3 is that it alternates between side scrolling and top down.

Shmups are much, much harder and technically complex tho and I say this as a big run n gun fan. There's nothing in run n guns that comes close to scoring in a Raizing or Cave game

You are a gaming titan if you can beat Truxton, Raiden, motherfucking IKARUGA without resorting to cheating or quarter pumping.

>> No.5302428

Also is Contra loved really? Contra threads here die very quickly, most people suck dick at them and can't 1cc anything and Konami neglects it. There aren't even any good ripoffs besides Super Cyborg. Run n guns as a whole are just namedropped every now and then, few people actually play them.

>> No.5302432

>>5302424
>but I like Mercs
Not them, but boy has that game not aged well. And forever I didn't know it was the sequel to Commando. The Genesis version is superior in that it's almost like the arcade game, but also has another "quest" that's longer and I do believe has new content, since it's been a long time since I've played it.

>>5302424
>Shock Troopers
On the other hand SNK games aged like fine wine.

Not OP, and I love Contra 1,2, Hard Corps, and Rebirth. The rest can fuck off, except for maybe the Game Boy one.

>> No.5302443

>>5302428
I haven't 1 CC'd Contra, but I've beaten it without resorting to the Konami Code that most people wound up using.

While I wouldn't call it a rip off, because it has it's own unique elements, Metal Slug definitely draws heavy inspiration from the Contra series.

>> No.5302445

>>5302436
Why just those? Shattered Soldier is just Hard Corps 2.0, Contra 4 is very solid, Uprising is fantastic as its own spinoff and even Neo Contra is an enjoyable top down run n gun. Only the PS1 ones and Force were crap.

>>5302443
I mean something recent, back in the day tons of run n guns had Contra influence but overall the these days the genre's pretty neglected. Shmups are obscure too, but they get high quality doujins and the occasional good western indie release still.

You are missing out. If you like Rebirth there's no reason you wouldn't like 4 besides maybe the length. It's a great series.

The big boom of the FPS genre with games like Doom and Quake took away a lot of interest from the genre in the mid 90's. Even today, most new shooters are first person.
