Who were some creators from the demo scene who ended up making good games on mainstream consoles? I can recall Factor 5 and Argonaut. Also the guys who did The Adventures of Batman and Robin for the Genesis.
Were there any others?

Welp, time to watch second reality I guess.

Those dudes who made that winter olympics game for the SNES?

It's kind of an annoying to see cool demoscene shit but have the disappointment of its non-interactivity. It seems like there was wasted potential from that era in that demoscene tech wasn't sufficiently exploited in games.

Well Futurecrew obviously birthed both Remedy and Futuremark (3D mark benchmark)

The problem with most demoscene is that the aesthetics were great but when they took it to games the gameplay was shit.

If I remember well, some demo scene crew programmed / sell a 3D engine for the GBA in it's latter days. The engine was used in a racing game and maybe an Asterix one?
I'm sorry, but source will be needed, I hope I don't mix things up.

Its not called euro trash for nothing.
Games look good but gameplay is equivalent to shit.

desu I never heard this term before I came to /vr/. I still haven't encountered it elsewhere.

I'm still sad that Shattered Horizon was released exclusively for Vista back in the day, they really killed the game's potential.

I think it's a general-purpose troll phrase on /vr/, maybe an adaptation from either "eurotrash" for European tourists, or a mixture of the board gaming terms "Ameritrash" and "Eurogame" for describing game styles. Either way, I don't think it's a big deal and the phrase can be ignored.

I think it's a not totally unfounded criticism with a lot of style over substance copying of Japanese games (without understanding or copying the underlying mechanics), but the real reason is simply because there was almost no demo scene in the USA. You can work out the rest
Another good example would be the Silents, who became Digital Illusions to release games like Pinball Fantasies, and then became Dice of Battlefield fame.

Not that I disagree, I've played some European computer games that were beautiful, but the gameplay ended up just feeling like worse versions of other games. I more called it out because I don't like the idea of dismissing things, especially large groups of things, just because of a convenient buzzword.

You are right about the demoscene existence though, part of it was scale too. Someplace like the UK is pretty damn small, you could collaborate on a project with somebody pretty easily. The US is basically fucked for you unless you live in a major metropolitan area or are very close to one.

Finally, interesting contribution, I guess DICE stands for "Digital Illusions Central Europe" or something?

Apparently the CE stands for "Creative Entertainment", although I don't see any legit source for that.

I guess they changed the meaning over time:
>Digital Illusions Computer Entertainment
>Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment

btw. I really liked the output of those swedes back in the day. Their Pinball Series was just fantastic and was the blueprint for all the later pinball games from other devs. The platformer Benefactor was also very nice.

It's really a shame to see the state of DICE as EA's bitches today. Their games were much better when those had the size of a single Battlefield texture.
