I have to agree thay R4 is over rated, but you overlooked some points:

>AI cars have barely any AI at all and are mostly just there for you to drive past
>further to that point, you only ever have 1 car on screen with you at a time, and there's no dynamics to races at all. To elaborate, races progress like this; drive up on car, pass him, go far enough that he's no longer in rear view, next car appears, repeat until you win
>the focus of development was sound direction and graphics. So the presentation is top notch for a PSX game, but everything else is bad.
>the game as a whole feels like a tech demo, more than a complete game because of an almost total lack of modes and race variety, combined with the "one at a time" gameplay.
>controls are overly simplistic, even for an arcade racer
>only challenge comes from cars simply being faster than you. So the exact same cars on easy mode are slower than their expert mode counterparts. For that matter, skillful driving only barely has an impact on races, because of this and the "one at a time" thing. Players are literally handed victory, as long as they don't drive like absolute retards and ram everything.

It's a fun little game for what it is, but I can't stand to play it anymore. It' was impressive from a technical standpoint when it was released, but now it's a pointless relic.

R4 might not be the best racing game, but the presentation is PERFECT. The menus and music, the cool pre-race track preview with the "Riiiiiidge Racer" tune. Even the interstitial animation for the portrait boxes where it draws out an outline before displaying it looks fantastic. R4 is the very definition of AESTHETIC.

I think it is. I have an affinity to the night driving neon look. Playing late at night in the zone with the JogCon, listening the great music. I had no idea what acid jazz was, but I can listen to the R4 soundtrack on loop (maybe not including the Pac-Man song). Of course, Nagase Reiko makes the game better and inspired me to try the newer releases. I even bought the specific DLC songs from R4 for the newer releases just to recapture that feeling. However, to me, it will never beat that feeling playing R4.

For R4, I used the JogCon. The NeGCon I used for Rage Racer and Wipeout games. The JogCon is nice since it sort of turns and fights you a bit with some resistance. I figure it would work better with R4, since it game with the game.
