And the Genesis was called the Mega-Drive.

Everyone I know calls it the PSX, but by the same token we are all from North America and not some 2nd world nation. PSX was the name that was tossed about in magazines for months and years leading up to the final name being the "Playstation". Part of this ongoning clusterfuck of a debate is that it is region limited. No different than the famicom vs Nintendo entertainment system nomenclature. Someone in japan can say "No on called it the NES", and they are perfectly correct. No one in the USA called it the famicom unless they were prehistoric weebs.

How is this even a thing. The use of PSX is documented. There was no PS2,3,4 to warrant calling it PS1. And the PSOne was released late in the life of the playstation and was meant to differentiate it from an original PlayStation.

Most of those aren't even authoritative in the slightest and any that are use it because it was it's old codename before they released it and changed it to PS1 to fit with Sony's branding.

Nowhere does Sony have any legal material that ever calls the shipped product a "PSX". In fact their legal page says
>“PlayStation” “PSP” “PS2” “PS one” “DUALSHOCK”, “SIXAXIS” are registered trademarks of Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc.

Just because a magazine was named PSX and a few magazines might have used the term once or twice, doesn't mean normal people were saying it and that it was part of the vernacular. There's a reason there's such a huge debate about this online and such a huge pushback against PSX, you have a generation of people now calling it PSX and a generation of people who grew up with playstation who never used the term and are saying "what the fuck."

And an entire group of North American gamers who called it PSX even when it was contemporary. You can't forget them when you are seething and projecting. People called it the PSX. Just because you and your 3 imaginary friends didn't does not discount the fact that yes, there were people who called it the PSX. You don't have to like the facts, but that does not change the facts. Your feelings are not facts, and are 100% irrelevant to the discussion

I was just referencing back at this image, and I don't doubt that there are fellow PSX-Bros all over the world. I think that the "Psx or PlayStation" debate is a lot like "inverted or not" control schemes. It just is, and some people simply cannot accept that other people did not do as they did, and will not do as they say. I will continue to call it a "PSX" as I have since the mid 90s. I got to see a lot of things come and go. I never gave 2 flying fucks who called it what. You could have called it the "grey cd player thing-a-majig" and everyone would know what you were talking about. I still have a few PSX systems at my house. 1 is hooked up, one got loaned to my brother and the other 2 are still in boxes.

Personally I don't have any problem with people calling it PS1, it makes perfect sense from the modern perspective to differentiate it from PS2 and so on. I use PSX and PS1 interchangeably myself depending on what makes sense in the context (like comparing PSX and N64, or PS1 and PS2).
It's really annoying though how if the wrong person sees you use the term PSX they'll throw a hissy fit and start posting about that obscure PS2 thing that came out in late 2003, as if that somehow invalidates everyone using PSX to abbreviate the PlayStation for years prior.

Born in 88' here. I had a Super Nintendo and my cousin had a Playstation. When the Playstation 2 came out we started referring to the original as the Playstation 1. I have never heard anybody say out loud "Pee Ess Ex" when referring to a PS1. Out loud we would always say Play Station 1 and online we would type PS1.

It's a written expression mainly used by magazines and people on internets in late 90s/early 2000s. Because people are lazy fucks typing Playstation (which was what every referred it in person) is obviously too much work so everyone used the PSX acronym instead. To give a modern 4chan example of this in 2009 people actually typed the phases "my face when" for a while but after a while started to >mfw instead

Also I'm 35 and I have never, ever heard anyone saying NES in person but it was simply "the Nintendo" before SNES came out and "regular Nintendo" afterwards.
