Reasons why Sonic 1 is underrated and better than Sonic 2:

>Shorter, so it's more re-playable and easier to find time to play through the whole game in one sitting.
>More interesting obstacles with more interesting tech to quickly bypass them, if you are skilled at Sonic games Sonic 2 becomes boring with how straightforward the levels are.
>Spindash, while I won't call it a crutch, is definitely redundant and unnecessary if you are skilled at the game.

I have been playing Sonic my whole life, I used to consider 2 the better game but as I become more adept I find myself more often coming back to and being more interested in Sonic 1.

1 is the weakest of the genesis era. Spindash just makes those games

I think spindash just casualizes the game too much, it's basically the boost of the original games, and IMO you can see a big difference in how levels were designed going from Sonic 1 to Sonic 2 and 3, based on the inclusion of spindash. Specifically, the levels having more flat, straight areas in which to boost, since the techniques from Sonic 1 for building speed using jumps and small hills were basically rendered useless.

sonic 1 > sonic 2

When sonic 2 came out it was just a giant disappointment. Totally fails as a worthy sequel. Amerifats liked it because they taylor made the game for them.

By the end of 91, Sonic 2 was the most anticipated sequel, since sonic 1 hit like a bomb. I remember seeing screenshots of sonic 2 in EGM and gamefan. It looked ok, maybe a little lackluster. Maybe after the jaw dropping first game i expected something spectacular.

Then i rented sonic 2 the week it came out. Played it. And as i play i wasn't not realizing yet what a joyless experience Sonic 2 was. Sonic 2 felt RUSHED, empty, uninspired. It was more of the same but only worse. The spin dash is alright. And tails was an ok addition as well. As in a secondary sprite up on screen at the same time. But none of this was enough to create a worthy sequel to one of the greatest games ever made.

And when you think about it, Sonic 1 deserves way more credit, because it started a series that still lasts and will probably outlive us all.

And like that guy said above, once you get familiar with the chaotic S2 development it becomes rather obvious why the game was such a disappointment.

>/vr/ hipster contrarians are now claiming Sonic 2 sucks because everyone rightly agrees the first game sucks and they need to be different

Also claiming Sonic 1 lends itself to replayability is silly. It's the only game with three acts per zone as a standard. It's tedious. Sonic 2 was bigger and better in every way.

No, no it doesn't. People acknowledge that it started the series just fine

>> No.5297474

>>5297248
Yeah, I'm not saying that, I'm just sayin Sonic 1 has a tighter design, partially because it did have a more controlled development cycle, and partially because spindash just throws the careful momentum-based skillset of Sonic 1 out the fuckin window. It's basically a go-fast button for bad players. That doesn't mean I think Sonic 2 is shit, just not as good as Sonic 1.

Though if I'm being completely open and honest, then I think Sonic CD was the best because it adds exploration to the series, which I think was the overall missing element and really makes the game excellent. I keep hoping to see a 3D game that plays like Sonic CD, but in three dimensions, but we keep on getting these high speed hallway affairs, truly a shame.

But yeah, I can't agree with someone who thinks Sonic 2 is a bad game. I can agree with someone for seeing that it loses something coming off of Sonic 1 however.

>> No.5297504

>>5297474
I feel Sonic CD was the worst because the shitty level design is counterproductive to both speed and exploration.

>Wanna go straight forward to the goal? Springs, bumpers, and gimmicks keep pushing you backwards.
>Wanna take the time to explore? Springs, bumpers, and gimmicks keep pushing you forwards

>> No.5297565

>>5297474
Well I can agree with you. A lot of people slate 1 and CD for not having the same flow as Sonic 2/3/S&K, but I agree the fun of Sonic 1 is keeping up momentum and CD’s levels are pretty big and complex.

I’m not sure if Sonic 2 being rushed contributes to it having more simple levels, I think Sonic 1’s levels were just more influenced by contemporary platforming games while Sonic 2’s flat and fast levels were probably designed to back up the marketing of the Mega Drive as being a super fast computer compared to the SNES.

As for the spin dash, I feel it’s a worthwhile addition to the game, if only to eliminate the need to run back and forth just to build up speed. But again, I imagine this emphasis on getting and keeping Sonic at speed is to tie in with the marketing.

CD needs more incentive for exploration and multiple pathing if you ask me. If you are going for a speedrun/time stone ending you will probably only see 1% of the level geometry

Wrong. Sonic 3 levels slow down a disgusting amount as early as stage 3

Sonic is about going fast, not fucking being platformer.

Sonic 2 is best.

>>Shorter, so it's more re-playable and easier to find time to play through the whole game in one sitting.
This is the biggest reason to why Sonic 1 will always be the best Sonic game. When ever I pop in a Sonic game I always do Sonic 1 because it doesn't overstay its welcome. While I am not a hater of zones like Oil Ocean, there are just too many levels to zip through and something like Sky Chase doesn't help. With that said Sonic 3 & Knuckles while great, it is a game I don't go back to playing as often since it is much lengthier than the other two since it doesn't have a single sit down to play in mind.
>>5298000
Sonic is about momentum. Speed comes later when you are more familiar with the game like any other game, it is just more noticeable in Sonic games.

that's a pretty shitty excuse considering Sonic3 has a save system, so instead of playing Sonic1 twice in two sittings, you could play Sonic3 once in two sittings and stop half way through. How does that make Sonic 3 worse exactly?

Sorry, but Marble and Labyrinth Zones make the game come to a real halt. Very boring levels that were forced to be separated from each other due to how boring they are. We almost had a game where we had Green Hill, Labyrinth, and then Marble as the first three zones of the game.

You can easily beat any act in the game in 5 minutes outside of maybe 3-4, that 25 acts at 5 minutes each, add an extra 10 for the longer levels and you have 135 minutes, just over 2 hours. Adding on an extra 3 minutes per emerald just to be safe, 14*3 is 42, adding it to our previous total gives us 180 minutes, or 3 hours on the dot. Even with leeway given, you should have enough time in an afternoon for that.
