best classicvania

>> No.5286590

The annoying mid-bosses hindering the pacing of the levels and certain gimmick stages put it behind Rondo, Dracula X and IV for me, but still great soundtrack.

Yeah, compared to IV which has loose air control and the 8-way whip and crouch-walking, or Rondo's/XX's/Bloodlines' item crash move, the healing herb isn't such a big deal.

>> No.5287438

>>5287430
Dude, being able to heal anytime you want is a big deal though.
X68000 also has diagonal-down whippan.
But yeah no other CV is really like the original. CV III only if you play Trevor-only.

>> No.5287467

>>5287438
You are triggered way too much by the herb. It's not optimal since it eats like 15 hearts, offensive subweapons are better to bring along instead, like the cross.

>X68000 also has diagonal-down whippan.
Only when you're mid-air. Rondo and XX were the only one to get whip mechanics right, but then they add stupid stuff like the backflip, jumping onto stairs, item crash, etc.

>But yeah no other CV is really like the original. CV III only if you play Trevor-only.
Yep. The director of the NES games quit working on them for some reason, which explains why all the 16-bit entries deviated from his wonderful formula.

x68k has the best soundtrack in the series. my issue with it is that it could've had a couple extra levels. why didn't they just bring over the rest of the original castlevania 1 levels?

Then again, 16-bitvanias are overall pretty easy when compared to 1 or 3 (Trevor-only)

I love bloodlines (there are only 2 CV games that I outright do not like at all--and you can find them on a Game Boy or Arcade near you), but it is in no way harder than IV. Bloodlines doesn't even get mean until the 5th stage, and at that point, you're almost done with the game.

No way. Then the game would have been too short and you would miss the kino moment of arriving at Dracula's gates.

Not to mention the "shit just got real" boss theme that plays for the last part of the game.

3s my favorite, it has the most atmosphere despite being a NES game. Bloodlines feels the most like the NES games besides X6800. I like Dracula X/Rondo the best of the 16 bit games for how fun the gameplay additions feel when you get good. You feel like more of a force than you do in the other CVs.

>> No.5291008

>>5290998
3 has some sick graphics. The swamps are the most aesthetic stage in the series. My favorites are 3 > Bloodlines > Dracula X.

>> No.5291010

>>5291008

The swamps are great. The music and frogs add a lot to their atmosphere also.

The most atmospheric stage to me is the abandoned mine though. Something about its placement in the game, music, difficulty, and look make you feel so isolated.

It feels rather different than the NES games
>can turn facing position in mid-air
>no numeral ranks for subweapons

>no cross
>"item crash" orb
>up diagonal whip
It's like a mix of IV and Rondo, more like Rondo.

No need for the harsh words fren. My point is that a casual gamer that played IV in '91 and then later played Bloodlines in '94 probably thought it was a step down for the series instead of just different. It's no secret that Bloodlines has been underrated for years and only recently(last couple of years) started getting the love it deserves.

>>5292323
Obviously it evolved the formula a bit. It just "felt" closer to the nes orginals compared to the other 4th gen entries.
