Person selling the item lists it low to get people's interest, then bids last second on their own auction so that they can put it back up until they get a price they want. Not sure why they don't just set a hidden reserve price, but I think that's what OP is implying.

>> No.528402

>>528385

obviously OP is implying that the seller had a friend or a dummy account to purchase it just above OP's bid mere seconds away from closing. OP also implies that the seller re-listed the exact item because he thought he could get more money through doing so.

and eh, its not like this is news to anyone either. eBay has been fighting a battle against these kinds of sellers for years.

It's been a few years since I've sold on ebay, but as I remember doing what happened to OP the seller should still have been charged fees since as far as ebay's concerned the item did sell. The guy's a moron for losing money on fees to continually re-list the item.

The worst experience I had (besides outright never getting my item and being out the $16), was last year when I got an NES game and the seller just threw it in a regular (non-padded) manilla envelope. No protection whatsoever and when I got it the envelope had ripped significantly, but miraculously just not enough for the game to have fallen out. It could have very easily been lost or outright stolen. What goes through people's heads when they do this?

I honestly think it's kind of cute, and adds a bit of character, and history to the cartridge. If I were selling it I'd definitely lower the price, because that IS still minor damage, but I don't mind if my games have the name of some kid who used to play it 15 years ago.

Sort of like how a lot of antique furniture collectors don't want it refurbished, and want the natural scratches furniture obtains during its lifetime to be there, or how antique weapon collectors will become enraged if they find out you've polished grandpa's gun, and ruined the patina.

I wonder if 20 years from now people will want naturally aged yellow SNES's rather than restored grey ones.

What's wrong with wanting to keep your possessions in good condition? I wouldn't buy a factory sealed video game; since I would rather be able to take it out of the box, and play it, but why get mad at people who do enjoy owning them?

Why do you need to insult people for enjoying something differently than you? You should just get over your superiority complex, and learn to let people have fun.

These are the reasons why I don't buy things off eBay anymore. I know lots of people (collectors) who use eBay snipers to get specific items they want. People who also buy items for cheap in Japanese auction sites, win the auctions, list them on eBay for 10x the price instantly.

She replys with AGS-101. Finally thinking im getting a bargin i go to buy it out. By the time i get to buy it out the seller has removed the item from sale. I've never had a problem with eBay or winning auctions I want. The key is to not be a retard- DO NOT BID UNTIL THE VERY LAST MINUTE and at that time BID THE MAXIMUM YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO PAY FOR THE ITEM. It is completely pointless to bid anytime before the last second, you are just pushing the price up and giving people the opportunity to outbid you. Remember there is autobidding as well, so if you bid $50 on a $10 item, it only appears as a $11.50 bid to everyone else. If they then try to outbid you by bidding $15.00, eBay automatically bids $16.50 on your behalf, and so on over and over again until $50. Don't be that retard who bids against the autobids.

A good deal means both the seller and buyer got a fair shake, while still being at or below fair price. Lowballing is going "You got a sealed copy of Megaman 3? My only ebay story involves a "good condition" ps2 with disc read errors, and pulling it out of the box completely crushed, almost like a fat man used it as a seat cushion.

I do have a story about my GBC and a copy of red version, though.

I lent both of them to a friend because he never played the first generation games. Since I'm not using my GBC, I lend it to him and fish out one of my more beat up red versions.

Fast-forward to like six months down the road when I ask for them back. He says ok, and that he'll bring them over the next day.

Three months and several hundred messages later, I find them in a box on my porch. The GBC has been mutilated. The screen is cracked and the lens is gone, the start and select are gouged out, the speaker holes are filled with shit, the on/off switch is gone enough that there are only stumps of metal on the main board, the IR port is gone, the ext port had its tongue out, the battery cover was gone, the springs were pulled out, and it was uniformly sticky.

The red version, though, was completely filled with what looked and smelled like cheese, and the board was completely corroded by it.

I've since nearly completely refurbished the gameboy. All I need is the matching battery cover and it will be complete again.

I must have bought roughly 90 games on ebay, and i've had very very few problems, and THAT'S because i live in a country that's apparently a sinkhole for lost mail.
I once bought a copy of Kagero: Deception 2, the disc was loose inside the case and got scratched to non-workability, seller quickly refunded half the cost (i still kept the case and bought a disc-only later).

In the only other incident, i bought a lot of 8 games from a major seller, 2 months and nothing, contacted them and they immediately apologized and refunded me for the whole $180.

I always ask for more than what something is worth when I'm selling locally OBO.

I think of it like this. If the item is work $20 you KNOW the idiot who wants to buy is going to want a deal and offer less. I got feed up dealing with niggers so now I just ask more and typically the offers I get are what its actually worth. I had one guy try and convince me my desktop + 3 24" monitors and my speakers were worth his asus transformer...

You get a lot of asshole whos actually get angry at you like "THIS IS NOT WORTH X!!!! IM GOING TO POLIUCE AND REPT U" and man they all spell like fucking apes.

One time I had my add up for my laptop. It was up for 20 min or so. The first guy sends me a GIANT email saying how I'm an idiot. (pro tip: don't insult your seller. If anyone gives me shit when its really not necessary I never sell to them no matter what) Anyway, he makes an offer and I say I'll wait to see what else I get offered. He FLIPS HIS SHIT saying that his offer is only valid for TONIGHT and he well not buy (keep in mind its been up for 20 min) of course I say no. resellers truly are the cancer of the retro market

and by that i mean the resellers that think they can make a career or get rich from selling vidya. You can't. You won't. Stop trying. Sell your games for a fair price that stabalizes the market while still making you a couple bucks. If you buy earthbound for a couple hundred and then try to resell it for a hundred more than you purchased it for, you're part of what's causing this hobby to be truly hard to be a part of.

But truly, most of the blame lies with the people stupid enough to pay more than a hundred bucks for a copy of Super Mario RPG for example

No, that's just stupid. I mean if I'm willing to pay $17, then like $17.01 that's a no brainer, it's just another penny.

A lot of the time I bid on things before the last 5 minutes, so I'll win, and I get the email about it, and I bid on it several days ago, and I'm just busy. Other times, you know you havve ot move funds around, or wait for your paycheck to come in.

Most of them are probably bidding without actually having the money on hand and try and scrounge it together once they've won. They're basically not people with money sitting there in paypal ready to use, but they spend an hour here and there on eBay anyway looking for impulse purchases. "Oooh I NEED that!" So they worry about winning it first and paying for it second. They'll bid on an auction Monday that ends Tuesday knowing full well they won't get paid until Friday and won't have the money in PayPal until Monday.

ebay ruined retro gaming pricing.

And god forbid you list something on there unless you are a business, by the time you pay out the fees you sell it for nothing.

No one's trying to trick you. Just exploit the glaring flaw in your logic.

I think you need to read up on "The Paradox of the Heap" and you also need to learn how auctions work. You seem to be going on the assumption that auctions are infinite in nature. I'd like to see how you handle an auction hall. Your head would spin faster than Taylor Swift goes through boyfriends, all the while muttering

>muh, muh penny

You are an idiot.

Sage because this thread is lost to the shitposters.

I have a copy of this disc, which, coincidentally I bought off Ebay from a complete jackass who was going to just blow me off until I threatened to get ebay involved. He still gave me negative feedback, my first one ever. Asshole.

So yeah, fuck ebay.

Never really had any big problems on eBay that couldn't be solved, but one thing that always irks me is when they list something as "Sealed" and then the item is simply in a plastic bag or has obviously been sealed by the seller himself.

I personally love the PS2. It's library is undeniably great. Most here would probably agree with that.

It also doesn't belong here on this board, but you just asked a quick question so who gives a fuck i'd like to think that we aren't as anal as other boards but that could only be a few of us

What defines retro?

>> No.546928

I was walking through the electronics department of WalMart back when the PS2 and Xbox versions of MvC2 were going for $100-ish bucks, and noticed a handful of copies of both versions in the bargain bin for $20 each. I about shit my pants.

Sadly, I didn't have enough money to buy them all out, but I did buy one copy of each version. I still have them sealed up on my shelf.

I guess I never really elaborated on that, huh? My bad.

I opened it because it looked like it was obviously re-sealed. It was sealed very badly. The guy bought a HM64 box and threw turok 2 in ti and then re-sealed it, hoping to make a profit.

Shady as fuck.

Update: I got my money back and I kept the items. I'm currently looking for a copy of HM64 if anyone has one that they're willing to part with.

I'll indulge you a little bit since I'm knowledgable on the subject. When the rerelease came out for PS3/360, the prices for PS2 and Xbox versions of the MvC2 dropped from anywhere from $80-120 to $30-50. The reason is that these ones aren't arcade perfect. The Dreamcast version is probably the port that was closest to being arcade perfect (before the rerelease) and is worth more, I'd seen people charging anywhere from 100-200 dollars for it in the past, but now I think it's probably 50-80 dollars. The rerelease really helped drop the prices on these asshole games

Anyway, all the thrift stores where I currently live only have shit that you'd expect old people to own.
