I’d like to dive into this genre. My only real experience with a point and click adventure game was putt putt saves the zoo. Does anyone have good suggestions for point and click games to start with?

LucasArts games are great fun. Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Indiana Jones, etc.

many people will suggest the old classics, but the problem is, they were designed for a generation with a way higher tolerance toward frustration... some of them can make you lose the game after several hours or just wont offer enough hints or something. eg: Maniac Mansion

>>5282168
LucasArts games are a good entry point because they're mostly designed to avoid no-win scenarios and sudden death. Among these, the first Monkey Island, Fate of Atlantis and The Dig contain the most grounded puzzles. Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle and MI2 get a little too creative and unhinged with the "logic" involved if you're just starting out.

I'd also try more modern stuff by other devs, like Broken Sword for example; it's less about inventory shenanigans and more about slow-paced, careful investigation.

Leave Sierra games for last.

The Lucasarts ones are the only ones worth playing to be honest. The others have major problems with terrible designs choices that are just unacceptable in modern day gaming.

Quest for glory series. RPG elements mixed with point and click. Slight bit of humor thrown in as well. Also, you can import characters from one game to the next.

Download ScummVM and play plenty of graphic adventures from there. It'll give you the best experience. Although both Monkey Island 1 and 2 to my great surprise are actually very consistent in their Special Edition form, because it's very beginner-friendly and also you can switch to the good old pixel graphics WITH the voice acting. Very good indeed, i would start from there if i were you. Then you can just go for whatever other game you wish: Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones, LOOM, The Dig, Discworld. All of these are the ones on the tip of my head and i assure you they're all good. A personal favorite of mine is Broken Sword: the second one is good but it's the first one that actually cuts the cake.

I do prefer LA's adventures, but Sierra's trigger happy design style made for more engaging experiences. Knowing you can't possibly fuck up makes the adventure less immersive, which is basically a early form of most people's main grievance with modern hand-holding game design

King's Quest VI and Quest for Glory will fuck you up every chance they get but still are definite must-plays. Some Space Quest ones too probably

Sanitarium is a pretty good starting point. No convoluted bullshit puzzles that I remember, decent story, unique atmosphere.

LucasArts games.
Start with the Monkey Island series, then Sam & Max and Day of the Tentacle (their best game). Broken Sword is a great introduction too.
Gabriel Knight is the best for getting into Sierra, but their games are not for beginners no matter what the hardcore fans say.

I would suggest The Secret of Monkey Island, its considered a classic for a reason.

There's an EGA version (16 colors) with midi music, or you could go all out and play the 256 color VGA remake with CD music.
Runs great under ScummVM.

Just stay away from the special edition.

The special edition is ok, just play it classic mode with the voice acting and it's actually the best way to play it.

Yeah I got those eventually and just play them in ScummVM without hassle. Maybe they eventually released an update that gave you the option to go classic + talkie though

Shame there's no way to apply the talkie patch to the original 16-color version though. I always liked that one best

Sierra games, King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest and so on. Then Monkey Island. Most of these aren't really point and click, but you type your actions instead of picking them from a menu.
>>5282183
By their own admission, they were designed so you would call their hotline for tips, or buy a guide from them. It's not even a secret.
Hell I might as well ask, are there any classic adventure games that aren't filled with bullshit puzzles? It feels like there's always at least one that doesn't make any goddamn sense.

Nope, i'll repeat it again, i have it on Steam and the thing works great since the beginning just as i said, without any kind of patch. You just have to start it in special edition mode and then switch to classic with the hotkey and so you'll have both the voice acting and the old graphics. Also this version has the developer comments in it so it's a triple win situation.

I'll give you the gestalt:

A namefag on /shmupgen/ on /vg/ started creating threads here and interjecting in JRPG threads by calling them menu-based trash and using the word "jarpig" a lot. He also pointed out how /vr/ is more interested in talking story in games instead of skill based games like shmups. This resulted in countershitposting both here and on /vg/, calling shmups derivative and samey. Now you just have people blatantly falseflagging and memeing like the guy you responded to.

Start with The Secret of Monkey Island, and then play 2 and 3. And use the Special Edition. Don't listen to autists screeching about using the original. I'm so old I played the originals when they came out and would only do so again for the nostalgia. New players shouldn't.

>> No.5291721

>>5291693
Special edition is garbage though. Even if you like the terrible HD graphics, the interface ruins the game. At least they let you play in classic mode if you want, unlike real abominations like the Broken Sword or Gabriel Knight remakes.

Fuck off nigger, i was a "new player" only a few years ago without any kind of nostalgia whatsoever and i played both ways. The new design is very good but absolutely not on par of the old style, i say so myself as someone who didn't play it in the 90s. I do agree with playing the Special Edition though, but that's just because you can play old-school + voice acting. To be fair only the second chapter let you do so, while the first one must be patched if you want both, but still... The one thing i liked a lot about that edition aside from what i just said, is the developers' comments whenever you enter specific areas.
