Simple technical knowledge has tanked among people that use computers ever since the smart phone revolution. What used to be common sense, like loading ROMs, is becoming increasingly seen as a mystical ritual only the chosen can do because people don't know how to use computers anymore.

There's people who couldn't do that back in the day.
Also some require extra steps, rather than just booting up an emulator and picking a rom from a directory, which can put off more lazy people.
Virtual Console and other ports and re-releases are often a good match for a fool and his money. Don't buy them and you'll be fine.

That's bullshit and you're a faggot, normies couldn't navigate a home computer worth shit in the 2000s and 1990s.
>Anon, your videogames gave the computer a virus! You have to delete them!
Many normies are inclined to click popups and shady links without thinking, on top of downloading and running god knows what.

I mean I have relatives who used computers for work for decades and they'd still just walk into obvious traps. I mean I love you mom, but how the fuck did you fall for "smileycave.exe", what did you expect?

If anything, smartphones and tablets are a modicum easier and safer for older people to use.

This makes a bit more sense when you consider that these people used computers back in the pre-Internet era, where the only real way to get a virus was from some shady floppy or tape, and those were often promising video games.
It never really registered with these people that "knew computers and had been using them for work for ages" that going on the internet and acting like a retard could get you malware. Viruses come from video games because that's what they did back when they learned what a virus was.

I generally always buy preloaded consoles/machines because it saves me the time of adding the roms myself.

Do you honestly believe people who buy preloaded consoles do it because they find it a challenge to load roms? That's rarely the case.

Loading roms is, as you say yourself a trivial task. But it just takes time, it's grunt work. Often it makes sense to get them preloaded.

yeah I saw that, it's not like posts on /vr/ always have any resemblance to reality. You have to find a torrent, make sure it has all the games needed, make sure it's not overkill by having 10 different versions of each game, one with a decent amount of seeders and so on and you have to do that for every system. Maybe not too hard for NES, but try it for lesser known systems or CD-based systems. I'd guess all that guy does is get NES, SNES, N64 and maybe SMS/Gen.

It's just easier sometimes to buy them like that. I'd have a lot more respect for what if he said you should have all those roms on a hard drive already, you still have to transfer though, which can take several minutes per console (especially cd based) or hours if you're trying to do it over wifi.

Curation could become a reason to pay for mini-consoles and emulated game collections if companies bothered with it. When you download a complete ROMpack, you get just that, a complete ROMpack with every valid ROM in the known universe. It is up to you to find games worth playing among these ROMs. In light of this problem (and it is a problem once you've played all the famous titles), a software/hardware package of good games that are relatively more obscure than the system's biggest hits could have a lot of value. For bonus points include some background information on each game and maybe some extras like a new localization.

And don't think that it's just old people, either. Certainly fucking not. A shit load of people under 25 have never seen a command prompt in their lives and think basic directory navigation in it is black fucking magic.

Then there's the upcomping smartphone/ipad generation, many of whom have never touched a desktop GUI and need absolutely everything handled for them automatically by apps.

Readme.txt is something they would rather pay someone else to read for them.

People raised on nothing but phones and pads will certainly stumble some with a proper computer, but the ones who care will learn. There's people younger than you and me who are halfway to the skill and understanding either of us have now, and as they grow older they'll gradually catch up.
