X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Just watch some combo videos and notations.

That doesn't mean technical. In fact the ability to just watch a youtube video and copy the combo is so simple it only requires execution.

Technical in a fighting game entails the game has a large number of relevant game mechanics. This would mean that an opponent may have some form of attack or defensive option that isn't intuitive but in retrospect is pretty interesting. This means situations are created where the opposing player must adapt to a new threat either by hard reads or themselves figuring out some hard counter.

What you consider "spamming" is highly technical. 'Fireball usage in SF2 has a ton of minor adjustments used to pin down players. simply knowing how to hadouken isn't enough.

This is why the 25th anniversary tournament winner, Damdai, used O.Ryu, because O.Ryu's fireball is literally just one frame faster on recovery.

I have a challenge for fighting game fans. Play Brutal: Paws of Fury on Sega Genesis. Let me know how far you've managed to get in one hour. Seriously, either this is the most hardcore complicated game on earth or I'm in some weird quantum timeline.

I bought this with my own 1994 yard mowing money, I rage quit within a week and never touched it again. It didn't feel like a bad game, but one that could be mastered with gitting gud, but it destroyed a part of me.

Eternal Champions is surprisingly deep, takes very long to master the different characters.

This game gets so much shit today, but back in the day, it was utterly impressive. I played it anytime I saw it in an arcade. My cousin is a little older than me, say 41 or 42, I hadn't saw him in a decade and we briefly talked retro as I saw him at a gas station and just happened to have an Atari Jaguar in my truck that I had just got that day. We didn't play together much back then because he was like 5 or 6 years older than me.

The game he mentioned was Pit Fighter. Of all the games from the 90s he could have mentioned (he had all systems besides 3DO), he talked about Pit Fighter and how bad assed the game was. He liked the arcade version best, but had it on genesis and super nintendo.

Playing it today, I'll admit, it's pretty shitty as a fighting game, but it has an undeniable charm if you can get into playing retro or remember what it was like back in the early 90s. The digitized graphics were really something back then.

Usually games from snk have interesting mechanics that takes some time to master. Last Blade is a good example. Samurai Shodown is a series that worth giving a try.

KOF. The problem though is that a lot of them aren't very well balanced.

So technical it takes years of training to even hit your opponent.
