I took a look around my local thrift stores yesterday. They have two Sony Trinitrons. A KD-32FS170 and KD-27FS170. They offered to give both of them to me.

I want them. But the thing is... I don't need them. I have owned goliath CRTs before, ones much bigger than these other two. I have owned a CRT projector (which I gave away). I have other, smaller CRTs to satisfy my itch to play with them from time to time. I don't have a manner to move them (my back and neck is messed up from an accident, so that's out).

Why.... CRT gods? Why do you mock me with this boon?

I think I am pretty much done with big CRTs with the exception of ever coming across a KV-40XBR800 or a AM-4201R. These are the ultimate CRTs imo. The XBR800 being a 4:3 HDTV is no matter to me.

Hello! I must be considered a guest here, I guess, so please have some goodwill. Yesterday I picked up a Iiyama Vision Master Pro 514 HM204DT for cheap. I am yet to estimate its overall condition, but geometry and roughly speaking the electronics seem to be fine. (I'm going to clean the housing later this day, too.) I know this is a pc crt device, but considering some adjustments here and there, will this be an ok item for retro consoling, guys?

You're not going to use the monitor's full potential at all if you're just going to use it for retro consoles via an upscaler.
That monitor is incredibly good for modern games and overall desktop usage though.
You could run that thing at 1600x1200@110Hz or even 1920x1440@90Hz.
Consider yourself extremely lucky for finding that. I'm envious.

You should try Quake at 1280x768@160Hz with that thing, it's fantastic.

It's capable of displaying it at that nice refresh rate and it's much more detailed than 640x480.

That monitor will sync to 31kHz minimum while retro consoles output a 15kHz signal. You would need an upscaler like the OSSC to convert the signal to something the monitor can sync up to, which is at least 31kHz. Consoles will be displayed at 480p so you won't get those fat scanlines that some people are after(I'm not).

100% This. A consumer CRT TV with RGB(if you live in Europe) will give you a softer and more pleasant picture.

A line doubler and an upscaler are terms that refer to pretty much the same thing.
SD means Standard Definition, which is 480i (and 240p). Almost all CRT TVs that aren't the late High Definition models are SD televisions.
Since you live in Germany, you can pick up almost any CRT television and enjoy beautiful RGB picture.
Beware of the 100Hz models since they will have "motion blur" and will add a frame of lag, making lightgun games unplayable.

A line doubler is essentially a very basic upscaler. It's also preferable for 240p content, as it skips most of the processing and traditional scaling that comes with "upscalers". 480i benefits from some of that additional processing, notably for more thorough/higher quality deinterlacing. At this point, the way to go would be to be either the Retrotink2x (paired with an HDMI->VGA DAC) on the cheaper end or the OSSC for the higher end option.

Consoles are only going to output either 50hz or 60hz, depending on region. 100hz implies it's taking said 50hz input and applying frame doubling and/or interpolation to reduce flicker. While that sounds like a good thing, it introduces various visual artifacts, as well as a delay which ruins compatiblity with light guns and the like.

Size matters is all I can say. I've owned a dozen giant CRTs, including Megaview 37" (which I paid $30 at auction for six (6) of them at one point).

$3000 is a bonkers number. I know where there are 36" televisions with component input for less than $100. I know if I looked around I could find another Megaview for probably free to $200.

KV-40XBR800 televisions look amazing. You just have to have seen one in action to understand it. Mitsubishi and NEC presentation massive multimedia monitors can look great, but WEGA looks just that much better in terms of color and contrast. Lack of native 240 and 480 line resolution is no bother to me since I have more interest in moving on to more exotic scenarios where 1080i can be utilized. Not all for /vr/ purposes. Imagine playing modern PC games in 4:3 1440x1080i on a 40" Trinitron with a Super Fine Pitch tube.

By the way, a 40" 4:3 image is still 20% larger area than a 40" 16:9 image. With more usable screen real estate.

Some years down the road I bet the Gen Z is going to be complaining about how everyone right now is overlooking the HDTV CRTs because "muh scanlines" and they're all getting sent to the dump when they could be used for excellent displays for all kinds of other things (like watching hd releases of 4:3 television shows)

You are very lucky to acquire that monitor and the more you learn about this hobby the more you'll understand what you have.

Retro games running with the right shaders through RetroArch will look very, very, very good.

240p120 is possible on this monitor, but you will get slight blurring on moving objects. Try it yourself and see whether it bothers you.

Forget upscalers and real hardware consoles. RetroArch output is vastly superior and more flexible.

They still have the great color, contrast, response time, and glassy smoothness of CRT video. They have viewing angles that surpass all LCD.

OLED and Plasma could be interesting, and I do keep a lookout for a good used top-tier plasma to experiment with. Last year I nearly drove out of state to buy a 50" Pioneer unit before it was taken by another person nearby.

Have you owned one or just seen it in public or at someone's house? In uncalibrated form being fed video from a cable box or satellite dish they are unremarkable compared to a LCD. But they have a higher potential, and once calibration and service menu adjustments are done the image is stunning. High-end LCD and Plasma can about equal it or surpass it in one way or another, but then there are things that the CRT just plain does better. CRT images have a type of contrast to them known in photography as micro-contrast* that I have never seen an LCD deliver. This gives a 3d feeling.

*this is a rabbit hole, go down it and it might take some time to come back up

At this point, condition is everything. A fresh, lightly used but somewhat lower end set can be more desireable than a higher end set that's seen a lot of wear and tear.

As a brand, the Sony is a much safer bet overall, but the quality increase of the Apex's S-Video over Composite would be welcomed, and you might prefer the look of a slotmask over an aperture grille(Trinitron). Does price come into play at all?

$50-100 depending on where the auction goes in the next day. I live in Reno, Nevada and there is absolutely 0 quality CRTs left on Craigslist & eBay local pickup. I also see a 14" PVM-14N5U which is more like a 150 mile drive but a bit more expensive. I specifically want a Sony PVM because of how they look, but if anyone has any recommendations that might be similar I could look into locally that'd be appreciated. I'm planning my first console to be a PS2.
I'm planning on using it for both PS1 and PS2 games, and I already have some discs for both of them.
I might get some more afterwards.

I don't know what TV you're thinking of but it's not the 40XBR800.

It has DVI and Component input.

However, I revisited the page for Sony Super Fine Pitch tubes and realized I had made an error of thinking the 40" set had a SFP tube when it did not, it only has the Hi-Scan tube (max visible resolution of 853x1080) , which I am actually fine with.

The KV-36XS955 is the big 4:3 SPF tube. If I came across one of those I would probably take it.

First time RGB CRT owner here, I just want to make sure I pick up the right cables for this bad boy.

I'm gonna need BNC breakout cables, does this model have external sync? (on pvm this is usually labeled "EXT SYNC") Where should I buy my cables?

HD/Cs is for either the horizontal portion of RGBHV or composite sync for RGBS. Component should trigger as the third input button on the front; If not that, the fourth. The three adapters should be all that are necessary.

I don't believe terminator caps are necessary for it, but don't quote me on that one.

As for cables
https://retro-access.com/ - only stocks what is available, so they go fast. Get listed early in the morning. Is apparently sick atm, so output maybe lower than usual. Only stocks console cables, but has direct to BNC as an option.
https://www.ebay.com/usr/wookieewin - sells breakout cables, often paired with retro-access's cables. If you're going direct from console to monitor, no switches, you'd want a female SCART to BNC cable. Sync stripper is --not-- required for that monitor.

Stay away from these guys, unless you are going to buy their premium "pack-a-punch" cables or whatever they call them (and even those are too pricey). Their regular cables have basically no internal shielding and end up generating a ton of audio interference, although it depends on the game and your sound system, sooner or later, you WILL end up noticing it, and then you can never un-notice it.

Because they didn't even used to have "the best ones", back when I bought my first cable from them. They were one of the only RGB cable purveyors back then, and they only had standard ones. After finding out how bad they were, I either bought from ebay or made my own.

When they finally introduced them, I assumed that the "pack-a-punch" cables were just them finding a way to con more money out of the technologically-illiterate retro game enthusiast, but it turns out those are actually just the "decent" cables. And they're still not as nice as any of the ones I bought from ebay.

You would want to send 1440x1080 to it as your selected resolution. That is the official supported resolution along with 1920x1080 leterboxed or cropped.

It won't resolve the full 1440 pixels of detail but it will still look very good.

An older(ish) computer game like Doom 3 would look phenomenal on such a TV. The 2 frames of lag would not be a big deal imo. RPGs would also look great.

Yes, you could look for the KD-36XS955. It's only a little smaller (but still an absolutely gigantic CRT) but it can resolve the full 1440x1080 resolution.
Some of the big NEC or Mitsubishi monitors have high resolution capability and you should research those too.

The cheap 4 port monoprice component switches are super good, even though they are cheap. I had two before I went down the extron rabbit hole, and I was very happy with them.

A poor quality switch with shitty shielding, poor grounding, and garbage isolation can very much introduce artifacts and changes to the signal coming out. Noise and ringing from signal reflections and poor isolation are the big ones. Y-Cables would be especially prone to that.
Lag wouldn't be an issue unless it's somehow holding and buffering the signal, which no decent switch should be doing.

Thanks for the input, I've been unsure about how to tackle my setup because my friends and I have pooled our consoles together. The end result is that we basically have two of every console 3rd gen onwards. I got the same to replace my now broken FW900. I use it with interlaced resolutions to get the highest refresh rates. In my experience you need a very good quality VGA cable (absolutely no adapters) and set the sharpness in the service menu. Get a colorimeter and displaycal for accurate gamma. Otherwise just set it to what looks right.

The kind of on and off contrast this thing puts out is insane. Super bright and perfect black levels. Unfortunately it's a bit less sharp and clear than my FW900, but it also does much higher refresh rates. In fact I got it to work at 375Hz at 800x600i in CSGO. I prefer higher resolutions though. For desktop usage I like either 1920x1440 or 2560x1920, which it doesn't resolve fully, but still looks way sharper and better than 1440i.
You can also do crazy high resolutions like 3000x2250 at 81Hz, which actually looks really good.

Yup, but this monitor somehow gets sharper the higher res you go. The FW900 was fine at 1920x1200, this isn't sharp at 1920x1440.
Also vertically it does resolve it. You can also somewhat resolve information smaller than the grille pitch, at least to a point. I can see around 1900 to 2000 horizontal lines before they blur together even if there are only 1600 to 1700 stripes

But even then, you'd have to configure a bunch of shit on your Thinkpad make sure it even displays (even if it supports 31khz). I'd imagine a far easier solution would be getting a system that works well as a media center and can output RGB/Component. The OG Xbox immediately comes to mind.

Turns out it isn't that. This set is a Flat, and doing some research, those are quite more prone to geometry issues than regular curved sets. I usually set Contrast pretty much to max, or close to it, and in doing that I was making it that much worse.
If I put the contrast way down, the bouncing effect pretty much stops, but then the picture looks like shit. I've been messing with service menu for about an hour to find a happy medium. Any suggestion to make the image look good without a lot of contrast?

The only thing I could say is either play in a darker room, or alternately the flyback usually has an adjustment knob you can turn with a screwdriver. That may help if your set isn't as bright as you would like.

TVL is calculated horizontally by a measure of the height of the screen. An alternative explaination for the measurement would be 75% of the horizontal size of a 4:3 display (since that would then be 3:3).
As such, if you want to get the horizontal resolution of a 1000TVL 4:3 tube, you'd multiply the TVL rating by 1.33, giving an effective resolution ~1333 by [actual display resolution](480p/720p/etc). To go from horizontal resolution to TVL, multiply by .75.

The only real way to work out how true these two numbers would be would be to go ahead and actually count out said line count.

I have some weird color issue on my Magnavox. I'll take some photos later.

The left side of the TV will sometimes appear slightly darker and more bluish while the right side will display more red/pinkish. The effect comes and goes. It isn't very noticeable when playing 3D games but super noticeable when looking at a mono color screen (especially white) or scrolling in a 2D game. Does that sound like something that could be fixed with a degaussing coil?

The 4:3 HD CRTs(as well as the SD sets with the option) use vertical compression. The raster itself is physically squeezed down to a 16:9 ratio; The letterboxing is not baked into the signal unless it's on the part of whatever source you're feeding.

In regards to the resolution you'd want to send it, 1920x1080i would be the one it's expecting, but it should be possible to uncompress the image if you wanted to feed 1440x1080i instead, if I'm remembering a bit of fucking around on my own HD set correctly. Note: the various geometry adjustments, especially regarding linearity may not be able to properly adjust the image in this mode, so your mileage may vary.

This is an interlaced resolution though, obviously, so it's going to effectively be 1920x540 for each field. If you try the 4:3 1440 approach, messing around with 1440x540 or similar might give nicer results.

There are no black boxes added. You're still getting the full 1080i vertical resolution, not less. Think of it like making a sandwich. If you press the sandwich together to flatten it out, all the layers of meat/bread/etc are still there, just thinner and giving the look of being wider.

The reason I mention 540 is because it is an interlaced resolution, meaning the full image isn't being drawn in one go, it takes 2 passes to draw the full frame, just like with 480i on a standard definition set. Two passes of 540 is 1080, the full frame size.

tl;dr - No, you're not losing resolution from black boxes, so long as whatever you're feeding the TV doesn't already have said black boxes.

See picture related. The letterboxing done when doing 1080i is not using baked in letterboxing. That portion of the screen is literally not being drawn to; Each of the lines of video that would be drawn for fullscreen 4:3 is still being drawn, they're just pressed closer together. This squeezing down is what makes the image look like proper 16:9 video and not overly tall.

If the letter boxing is baked into the VHS, as in, they specifically put black bars into the video on the tape itself, you'd be going to have a vertical resolution of something like 360i. On an aperture grille this is true for the most part. Although since the image is smaller you're still losing some practical level of detail at the same distance from the screen, and I'm not sure about the ability of the CRT to be able to focus tightly enough to preserve the full 1080 lines of quality.

On a shadow mask I think you'd for sure lose resolved detail due to the relative pitch going up. I still kind of want to try playing centered 1:1 ratio 320x240 on a 36" SDTV with a shadow mask to see how it compares to a TV of about the same size.

crt screens don't have a native resolution. the 1080 is just the number of lines it is trying to draw. When it shrinks the raster, it attempts to resolve those 1080 lines in a smaller space -- as if the entire crt were smaller. The electron gun can do this just fine, it just has to increment a smaller distance between lines. So the crt certainly displays 1080 lines. The question of whether those lines overlap is a question of its dot pitch or tvl (tvl is determined by dot pitch more or less).

For the ADC one it's not gonna be easy to hook up to a PC, if you have no interest in the era of Macs it's compatible with directly I'd recommend selling it on to someone who does. Directly it's compatible with a Power Mac G4 except for the ones before the Gigabit Ethernet, and Power Mac G5s except the final PCIe model.

To hook it up to a PC without cutting/soldering stuff, you'd need to find one of the third party DVI to ADC converters/power bricks, not the official Apple one, that didn't pass through analogue and doesn't supply enough power.
With cutting can chop the cable, splice it to a VGA cable + 24-28V power brick + USB cable. You'll still need a Mac to control the monitor's settings, maaaybe a VM if they kept the drivers through to Intel OS X.

I've had an old RCA brand CRT sitting around doing nothing. I just recently got some retro consoles to hook up. It only has a coaxial input so I'm forced to use an RF box to hook everything up. Shit man, I'm seriously bummed out on this. It's a freakin diamondtron, supposed to look good, coupled with that sexy clear case. This thing is a true beauty, they literally have them in some design museums. The problem is, the computers required to power them are so underpowered that in 2019 all I would likely be able to do is watch dvds or listen to music on them.

This is sad and I suppose an example of apple. They have the potential to make really cool things, but somehow manage to nerf them so they are useless in a few years time. I guess I'll just set it on a shelf and keep an eye out for a super cheap g4 or g5 to use it with. Don't get me wrong, I've found one for about $100 near me. Its an old Dell computer monitor I was given for free. Recently the screen gets progressively darker until you cant see anything in the center. Switching off/on the power button the screen is ultra bright for a white, then settles down into dark in the center after a few minutes. Very decent monitor. Emulation at 480p would likely look very good. Use a scan rate calculator to check what resolutions it can do. Horizontal scan is a maximum of 86KHz, but I know for a fact it can resolve 1600x1200.

I use a CRT as a daily driver. I can answer most of these questions.
If you're just doing text work I wouldn't recommend a CRT as a daily driver. Likewise, if you do a lot of text stuff and media then you probably want both a CRT and LCD.
Pretty sure it's a shadow mask. The later revision was replaced with an AG but you'd have to find that out yourself. The AG will be no 'better' in my experience, except I remember reading somewhere the AG revision of this monitor has a slightly finer dot-pitch.
Max resolution is tied to refresh rate, limited by horizontal scan rate. The maximum scan rate of this monitor is 86Khz so it'll do any resolution/refresh rate combo within these boundaries. Of course, the ability to resolve higher resolutions is limited by dot-pitch, and as this is an older monitor higher resolutions will appear blurrier and may have to be run at 60Hz, which will cause noticeable flicker.
Take a laptop to it if possible. Note that only cards older than the GTX9xx series have analog output.
It's monitor dependent the behaviour for out of spec resolutions. Most will just say "out of scan range" and not damage anything.
DVI-VGA involves no conversion so there's no signal loss, and in fact many people have experienced slightly sharper images with DVI connectors. Who knows if that's placebo. HDMI->VGA adapters tend to be decent but limit resolution on some higher end tubes and can cause crushing of black detail. Unless the tube is multisync it can only sync to scan rates between 31.4Khz and the upper limit (86Khz in this case). Any resolution and refresh rate within these boundaries -should- work, but mileage will vary.

All that said, if you plan on emulating games at 480p it'll look excellent. Some modern games will also be very good but just be aware you might not be able to run a good resolution unless the tube is higher end. I use a Sony GDM-FW900

My experience has been that games and media just look better on a display like this compared to any LCD or even most OLEDs as the motion and colour accuracy is just better. LCDs are sharper and not as much strain on the eyes, so I use a pair of Dell 2007FP for word processing, web browsing etc.

The KeyDigital transcoders I have are the KD-CTCA3 and VTCA3; First is Component to RGB(VGA) and the second is RGB(VGA) to Component.

Former comes up from time to time at a decent price, but the latter usually ends up sitting quite a lot higher price wise. Both are very good quality and support 240p/480i perfectly, but should be noted neither will play with 1080p.

Wow, that's bizarre. I'm no expert, but I've seen a lot of broken CRTs and none of them looked like that. It's definitely not a common failure. Geometry seems to be fine, the corners are being drawn properly, so you can probably rule out the deflection circuit.
I'd guess this suggests something wrong with either the electron gun assembly, the flyback transformer(responsible for horizontal oscillation - maybe it's producing a sinusoidal wave instead of a saw wave, creating that smooth gradient to black?), or with the board for the gun.
Again, I'm not an expert, just an Electrical Engineering student, so these are just (somewhat educated) guesses. Unless someone who knows better than me replies with an exact fix for you, it's probably in your best interest to start looking for a replacement on Craigslist, or if you're really attached to this monitor you could try to grab one with a broken tube and replace the boards/flyback transformer in yours with parts from the blown one.

It's not powered. I can only assume that the inactive speaker coil (or a particularly weak standard magnet, though unlikely) in it is acting similarly to a permalloy strip/etc would when placed around the neck of the tube, in causing a slight deviation in the deflection. I'm not sure whether it was there and I didn't notice (unlikely) or if the rough handling it took in actually moving it to it's current location caused the yoke to move a bit, but it's been there for a while and I just haven't worked up to do anything more than convergence adjustments as of yet.

I've finally gotten around to getting a desoldering gun, so I'm planning on disassembling the entire thing, completely recapping it, and redoing the landing entirely on it, so it shouldn't be there for much longer. Will be nice to see what it looks like with nice, fresh components.

The red gun most of the time goes bad before the other ones because it runs hotter. But you can double any CRT's lifespan by keeping the brightness/contrast to a reasonable level. They also used to in the 50s-60s do tube rejuvenation where an electric charge was applied to the cathodes to blast off used up emissive material and expose fresh coating underneath it.

Most CRTs have a quoted lifespan of 25,000 to 30,000 hours, however this isn't the time it takes for the electron coating in the guns to completely wear off, but actually just the amount of time they take to fall to half brightness. Hey, just got my first setup but i’m doing something wrong. just buy a new male DE15 connector, and when you cut the cable you have to figure out which cable went to what pin. Almost definitely the cables are color coded so it shouldn't be difficult and you just solder the cables onto the new connector in the old orientation they had; if they're not color coded there are ways to tell electrically but it may be beyond your range.

I used my NES on three different CRT TVs. These were:

The colors were slighty different on each one and I thought the sky in SMB looked more purple on the Proscan and bluer on the other sets.

Fair enough, but Nintendo did not fuck up the color of the sky for American audiences, they just decided to show us how blue sky is supposed to look, while they sacrificed that on their Famicom to sate their alternate palette tastes, which could have been influenced by their culture.

As I understand, the original spec as written in the '50s called for fairly dark phosphors in the CRT. Since customers preferred a bright picture most of the time, manufacturers usually didn't follow things by the book.

That's not entirely true. Later light guns work on later model CRTs just fine, but older light guns do not want to work with anything but a curved screen. Or they play, but are inaccurate because the gun was designed to work with the curvature of the tube.

So play Duck Hunt on a CRT flat screen all you want, but it most likely will be frustrating to get a good score.

Fairly sure the myth light guns don't work on flat displays is due to many flat displays being 100hz. Obviously the NES zapper won't detect the flash as well when it's not running the intended 50hz/60hz. I have a few flat displays and the non-100hz tubes work perfectly with all light guns, whereas the 100hz tube only sort of works with the Dreamcast gun.

As long as the Zapper sees the proper black screen followed up by white square when it expects to, it'll function properly. The fact that people have managed to get it working with flat panels by modifying duck hunt to have a delay function built in to make up for the latency issue proves as much.

Seeing that 32" Trinitron re-awakened my desire for another big CRT. So I have been fooling with my PC CRT monitor tonight. And it has only reinforced my desire for a KD-36XS955 or a KV-40XBR800. It can't be one of the lower resolution tubes. The lighting effects of modern games look amazing on a CRT, and 4:3 is still my by far preferred aspect ratio.

PC version. That's not a real photo. I took a photo of my PC CRT running the game in 4:3 and then used photo software to combine it with a photo of a KV-40XBR800. But it is a decent approximation of what the game would look like running on that TV.

40XBR800 has DVI input, so running PC games on it is no problem.

Which version of GBI allows me to scale up the image and looks good on a CRT? I'm fairly certain I'm using High Fidelity version now which puts black all around the image. Looks fine aside from some ghosting probably due to my svideo cables. I'd really like to fill in the screen and from what I read standard GBI is meant for LCD's and such while high fidelity and speedrunning are meant for CRT's.
