Yeah, it's no secret that western media called it the "PSX", "P.S.X", "PS-X" and other variants.
I believe the only semi-valid one is "PS-X" because you can actually find those letters on the system bios or the system PCB, but that's as legit as thinking the Nintendo 64 is called "Ultra 64" just because the PCB has "NUS" (nintendo ultra sixtyfour) on it. It's just the early codename.
Nobody really even knows what the fuck the "X" stands for. Probably "X-tremeeee" since it was the 90s.
In Japan, they always abbreviated it as just PS.

The only really odd one there is the japanese konami site screenshot. As I said, western media was all about "PSX", but in Japan, as far as I know, it was always PS. I have many japanese magazines and it's always PS.
Seeing a japanese website call it PSX is a rare one.

That's stupid. There's much more corroborating evidence that X stands for "Expansion", and it's one of the things they retained from their days of working with Nintendo. One of the most obvious examples being pic related, likely standing for "Broadcasting Satellite eXpansion". When you take into account that the only known prototype for the SNES-CD hybrid is called SFX-100 (Super Famicom eXpansion model 100), things make even more sense because the PS-X name was definitely coined as a catch-all term for interns confused about which project they were working on when looking at design documents, as they only had a year or two to reshuffle their workforce.

I was also under the impression than the very first PS1 testing workstations were really huge computers that operated UNIX based OSes, which would make the name PSX a good word play on the POSIX standard both systems actually used.

Japan was the one which came with the PS-X moniker in the first place though, since the console's development was all done in the Japanese HQ. That's why I say it's dumb that it stood for "eXtreme".

According to this, PSX was the codename. SCEA wasn't particularly fond of "PlayStation" and pushed to continue using the codename and it just sort of stuck as an abbreviation.

All of these are true, but neither means jack shit because Sony NEVER called it the PSX publically. And no, the dev name wasn't public, it was leaked. As long as sony doesn't call it the psx, it's not the psx. The name of the product is Sony Playstation, or PS for short. Thus, PS1 is also a wrong name.

Myself and my cluster of friends, who were all born in the late 70s also were there. In the early-mid 90s leading up to the release of this system I worked in both the video game section of sears, and in the video game section of a store called "Media-Play" (at the same time) Everyone called it the PSX.
This included gaming magazines and internet information, and we certainly followed the development of the system from its inception as a SNES expansion/sequel. I predicted a total failure of a system, and am glad I was wrong. The PSX was a perfect transition from the SNES for 2d jrpgs and created many great games.
