Do you guys think the PS1 holds up strictly gaming wise in 2019?

Some games do, some games don't. Just like every other console.

2D games, yeah. Most 3D games have aged poorly though.

>> No.5263309

Most of the top selling games do.

The fact that the crash and spyro remakes are top sellers despite having changed almost nothing outside of their updated visuals is proof that the gameplay is still fun to a large audience.

Pretty much this. The 2D FF ports are still unmatched, and stuff like Alundra, but most of the 3D fare is jank, largely due to a lack of support for analog controls (or a terrible implementation of them). Still, there are some outliers -- Quake 2 on PS1 is awesome.

Yes. Easily.
The PS1 has so much variety. Armored Core, Ridge Racer Type 4, Omega Boost, Dino Crisis 2, Ace Combat 2, all of these hold up remarkably well still. It's definitely THE best /vr/ machine for me.
Dunno if I'd say it's the best console from a strictly gaming perspective, but it's damn good.

There are plenty of games on it that when compared to modern releases, you don't feel like putting up with their conventions or controls or camera or whatever, but I'd also say that there are plenty where that isn't an issue.
Shit's great.

this is strictly from a gaming perspective
like, I'm okay with PS1-era 3D visuals, but I won't say they aren't kind of a fucking mess
affine texture warping, jittery polygons, seams in models (hilariously visible with the road in the Ridge Racer games), polygon flicker, etc, etc
there are PS1 games I think look good, but the earliest 3D home system I'd say still has games that hold up visually to this day is the DC, and that's pushing it a little

>>5263374
I'm still impressed at how good Quake 2 on PS1 is.
It's a nice, streamlined release that looks great and runs well, and I love the color effects, it's a lot more neon than on PC. Extremely impressive lighting for the machine.
My only major issue is the mid-level loading gates, it's not pleasant when you cross one and realize you need to go back and then it starts loading the previous area again.
Oh, and it's a shame it didn't have better DualShock control mapping options.

and man, 4-player splitscreen is a remarkably smooth experience, one I'd never expect the machine to handle as well as it does

Yeah, Quake 2 on PS1 is awesome. They pretty much just trimmed the fat from the PC original, made it look better, made the guns feel better, and wrapped it all up with a good split screen multi. It doesn't have the wealth of options or fancy effects that some other console shooters of the era had, but man, I've still yet to find a shooter on any platform that can reproduce the satisfying feeling of this game's double shotgun. In a lot of ways, Quake 2 made a better console game than PC game.

Syphon Filter is absolute trash. There holds a certain nostalgia for being the first 3rd person shooter that felt like it was in a 3D space and not on a grid. It also tried really hard to make its cutscenes feel like a movie. That is commendable. The way it trailblazed a path for gaming deserves it recognition. BUT have you even played it since the 90s? The voice acting is all time worst. The auto aim is a pain in the ass. Dark environments are hell to navigate. This game is a supreme chore to play. It all made sense and worked for its day. It just doesn’t pass the test anymore. This isn’t a fun game anymore. Father Time has been unkind.

I feel that the issue is more often controls than anything else. Sure the 3d games can look quite dated but stuff like Armored Core is still fucking solid as a game but the controls make it really quite a chore to play or at least get used to playing. A lot of the games were designed for the non-analog version of the controller which makes them weird or really controls starved.

>> No.5264116

armored core has fully remappable controls
as in, every button can be changed (eg, d-pad strafe, face buttons camera, triggers for attacks and whatever)
admittedly, the very first mission doesn't allow you to remap them, but that was a design decision carried all the way to the PS2 games

I'd like to add that for 3D action games, there's not really any ones that aged super well outside of the big hits everybody knows about like Crash, Spyro, or even Rayman 2 (although the PS1 version is the butchered worst version with the PS2 "revolution" closely behind). I might like Kingsley's Adventure but I know full well that it clearly does not hold up.

>most of the 3D fare is jank, largely due to a lack of support for analog controls (or a terrible implementation of them)
When you look back, those 2-3 years of the system not having an analog stick really hurt a lot of the games released on the PS1, especially for the multiplats. Some games went super retarded with their workarounds despite the game being clearly designed around analog movement. Even worse, some games still didn't fully support analog sticks even if they came out well after Dualshock's release. Look at Vagrant Story, that shit came out a full 3 years later and even though it had rumble the analog sticks just mimicked the D-pad. If Sony just had the stick as part of the standard design like Nintendo did with N64 the vast majority of the games would at least control better.

The 2D stuff on the PS1 holds up quite well. There's some lesser known games that I'm quite fond of, like Alundra and Arc the Lad. However, most of the highly praised 3D games have aged terribly. Take something like Vagrant Story, which is regarded as some masterpiece, yet it's easily one of the most boring games I ever played. The game not only looks hideous and consists almost entirely of puke brown corridors with some of the ugliest texture work I've seen, but its combat is beyond clunky. You can't simply fight an enemy like you would in a normal action-RPG, between every attack there is a pause where you have to retarget them. Even something as simple as casting a spell pauses the game.

This is also a game where you have to switch weapons constantly, and to do so requires constant laborious and lengthy scrolling through what has got to be the worst menu system ever made. The music consists of bland, utterly forgettable orchestral ambient tracks. There's barely any sound design to speak of, and a complete lack of voice acting, while still having cutscenes with close-ups of character faces, bizarrely enough. The story is nothing more than the cliche 'bad guy gets corrupted with ancient evil force and goes mad with power' trope told in a needlessly pretentious manner.

To put things into perspective: Vagrant Story came out within a year of action-RPGs like Severance: Blade of Darkness, Deus Ex, System Shock 2 and Diablo 2. Those are action-RPGs that are actually memorable and fun, even to this day.
