Am I one of the few people that still likes Mario Kart 64?
I've seen that this game has gotten a lot of hate lately (with complains like it hasn't aged well or that is considered the worst MK game by some, which I think is a pretty harsh statement), or that the competition of the time (DKR, CTR. etc...) makes it obsolete since those games made vast improvements over MK64, but dunno, replaying it and the controls are smooth as hell, the tracks are fun, the sound design is incredible and there's some tech to learn if you wanna get good or do the time trial thing, not to mention the multiplayer factor makes it a blast for anyone.
I know about the rubber-band AI, but at least they don't spam items all the time like in modern Mario Kart games.

There were ones that were fun at the time for things like multiplayer but don't hold up very well (even comparing it to the generation that came directly afterward; I'd take a TimeSplitters game on the GameCube over any shooter on the Nintendo 64 for multiplayer any day).

Even at the time I preferred older games to the ones coming out on the N64. I'm glad there are people who like the system and all, but Mario Kart 64 is one of the only ones that holds up for me.

>> No.5264442

64 was probably the most satisfying entry of the series. Just got a really solid feel about it, and yeah the music is winner too. The best multiplayer Kart, especially battle.

At this point I can't even be bothered to play the new ones all the way through outside of the odd casual race. It's all the same at this point, and the newer ones have a 'looser' feel to them, for lack of a better way of putting it.

My only problems with it are that with more than 2 players you can’t have grand prix, cpus, or even MUSIC.

Those are all glaring problems to me. But solo or duo it’s great. But Mario Kart has come to be seen as a party game.

I loved SMK, I loved MK64, I loved MKDD and I loved CTR
now, getting back to them every now and then since adolescence:
SMK still holds up and I play it often
MKDD still holds up and it's very fun
CTR is absolutely fucking amazing and definitely holds up (the most, in fact)
but MK64 is just unbearable. Aged like milk, dare I say it.

I agree with the graphics being bad, even at the time I never liked the sprites.
The AI isn't even that hard, yeah they get a rocket up their ass to get near you, but the CPUs never use items in a way that can fuck you up badly, and getting good at mini-turbos = you'll never see them again.

IMO the graphics is not a legitimate complaint. For a fifth gen racer they're as good as could be. It's also not a major complaint of the game - it's just one person says graphics then another person it's like oh yeah immediately after.

Also the AI rubberband means that no matter how good you are it can always catch you. That's one of the main complaints, that the rubberband AI is unfair.

>> No.5265426

I don't agree with the graphics complaint. For a fifth gen racer they're as good as could be. Though you have two people saying graphics in a row here it's never been a major complaint afaik. Frame rate is really good also.

Honestly I was never a big of Mario Kart in general, I could never get into Super Mario Kart as it always felt too slow to me but maybe I was just playing wrong, I don't know. I don't mean to sound like someone who only plays new games and disregards anything older but MK8 is imo the best MK. I'd put MK64 under it though as I still think it holds up pretty well, rubber banding aside. I never liked Diddy Kong Racing and I really like CTR but I don't necessarily think CTR is the best kart racer of all time like a lot of people make it out to be.

Nah Zoomers into video games (the older ones at least, like 17 - early 20s, I myself am technically a zoomer unfortunately. ) love the N64 and the 5 games that everyone circlejerks about. Some of my peers would around school talking about how they play the "real, oldschool games" and not the new crap like Fortnite and it would always end up being the motherfucking N64 and the basic games everyone played back in the day like Mario 64, MK64, and the Zelda games. I'm pretty sure they were all just parroting e-celebs because they would always talk about how the titles listed above were the greatest games ever made but would never actually give any reasons why.

SNES was big with some of the nerdier ones, but again it was just the same handful of first party titles everyone and their mother played. Never met a single person who was "into retro" in school that played anything other than fucking Nintendo.

This is the only lingering complaint I hear as well. MK64 is my personal favorite in the series, but that's probably because it was my first.

I feel like there's a "Zelda effect" where each person's favorite in the series is whichever one he played first, usually as a young child.

There has never been a bad Mario Kart game imho.

Not necessarily. Each game in every series has different mechanics, some subtle.

When I tie a necktie, I like to use the four in hand knot. It was the first necktie knot I learned (it was in a scouting book), and I like the ease of it and the looks of the knot. I don't think that's nostalgia, and I don't think the effect in games I mentioned is necessarily nostalgia.
