I'm sorry, but op is a tasteless faggot.

It's alright. Solid in some parts, not so much in other departments.

No arguments there, it's got a rather niche audience and requires patience to fully appreciate.

It really isn't, outside of the sheer madness that went into the graphical side that is, all the tricks they used to make it look that good is a testament to the talent of the graphic designers and general staff that worked on this game.
It is a broken, unfinished mess of a game but the technical side of the graphics alone make it look much better than it really is.

Chaining is too hard on ntsc.

but NTSC is what the developers intended.
PAL is cheating.

op is a fag and probably didnt understand the game mechanics to enjoy it.

I agree. Very overrated by Sony fanboys.
Artstyle isn't even as good as they claim, all that shit brown palette.

You don't really need to understand the game mechanics since nothing works as intended.
You can safely disregard gemming, any magic outside of shaman buffs and maybe healing, spam break arts and maybe do a five hit chain with anything provided you go for damage over anything and you'll beat the game.
You can steamroll the game with your basic counter abilities too, no need to ever change any of your equipment either, that's how broken VS is, you literally don't need to enter your equipment menu once as long as you have even a bit of reflexes.

Chaining is a cakewalk. I routinely was doing 30+ chains the first time playing the game. I didn't learn until later they added a variable time on chains after 13 hits. I just adapted to it naturally while playing.

The game is great. I went in knowing nothing about it but that it was plodding and slow in its methodical nature. It was that 100% and I loved it for it.

On a repeat playthrough it wasn't as great as I remembered it to be. And that's because the combat is easily abusable, and the whole crafting was broken (most of the time you didn't notice any difference).

>> No.5261447

I absolutely love it but yeah it's a flawed game for sure

Were you there in 2000?

Did you witness the PSX hardware being pushed to its limits?

Have you seen a sufficient number of titles then with the same depth, in ambience, art, gameplay?

No. You were 5 years old at most then.

Discovering for myself how to break this game on the knee - and the aftermath of that - was literally one of the most memorable twists I have ever experienced in gaming (even despite being meta/fourth-wall-breaking in nature). The way it implodes like a house of cards after you put 2 and 2 together is so glorious there isn't any way at least someone on the team didn't know about that possibility and didn't set the pieces of the game up specifically to allow that to happen.

Even the visuals are overrated in this. Dull and bland, no colors. I know the dark theme is the point, but it doesn't look so interesting.

Dumb it down a shade. Playing through it now and it's hard. What do you do.

This is ultimately what brought down the game in my eyes. It has lots of mechanics that sound neat on paper, but once you play the game proper you realize pretty much all of them (except for chaining) aren't need, and what's worse: even if you use them you don't get that much of an advantage.

>>5262584
I'm a bit rusty but from what I remember:

>Don't chain like a madman, that will just needlessly run up your risk. Stopping at 5~7 is good.

>Use a lot of Break Arts when you get them.

>Don't get hung up on all the Enemy Affinities. Correct application of Slash/Pierce/Blunt damage is what gives the most mileage.

It's fucking garbage but you can fix the gameplay with about ten dozen gameshark codes. Doesn't fix the cringe characters, unfortunately.

When chaining, watch your fucking weapon, NOT any sort of "prompts" (be it visual or audio). Press the button immediately before the weapon actually contacts the enemy. That will allow you to consistently make 30+ chains.
Completely disregard the "uuhhh high risk is probably bad ooohhhh".
Regardless of any modifiers. I repeat, regardless of ANY modifiers. The n-th hit in the chain, IF it connects, conveys at least n point of damage. Meaning, at least, 30 for the 30th hit.
That can be combined with the attack, that conveys to enemy 1/10th of the difference between your max health and your current health. You make it every second one, while chaining. In order to get the maximum out of it, you need to only have slightly more health, than the strongest enemy's attack will take out of you, while you are on the maximum risk.
Critical hits always connect. Also, there are gems for +20% chance to hit, that just might make it so that you'll have AT LEAST 20%/40%/60% chance to hit with non-critical hits regardless of risk anyway (depends on whether they come into the hit chance equation before or after the risk factor). It was either that, or critical hits were frequent enough as they were during my playthrough.
When mid-jump, you cannot be targeted for an attack (although you can target enemies while they are midjump, go figure). Use that to close the distance to dragons and other ranged fucks.

There. You have just made a rhythm game out of RPG.
