Just finished pic related. How are the ports / remakes, particularly the Super Famicom version? The combat being so basic made grinding much more of a chore than in similar games like FFI, are there any of those or a fan patch that would make it less of a pain in the ass?

You gain exp twice as fast in the remakes.

The only reason to enjoy this game is if you enjoy grinding too.

I played the phone port, it was clearly dumbed down. How to proceed with the rest of the series, which to play first? I know people argue about 3...

i've only ever played the originals so i couldn't tell you which phone port is better than which phone port.

i love DQ2 like it's my retarded ugly baby but i totally get why people hate it. it's just fucking mean and it has almost as much grinding as the first game, plus a couple of places where you can't reasonably be expected to figure out where to go next without either a guide or being a hardcore motherfucker and blowing the Echoing Flute on every goddamned screen in the game.

DQ3 is the first game in the series with a good balance of fun and difficulty. the mechanics of Class Changing are so badly broken that it's almost not worth doing it, but it's still fun and you should do it anyway and it's not that hard to beat the game on a casual walkthrough so it doesn't really matter.

DQ4 has built-in characters with personalities and probably the most solid story of the old classics. attempting to use tactics to manage the AI-controlled PCs is both frustrating and interesting, and there's a decent variety of people to swap in and out of your group so there's some decent value to replaying it.

DQ5 is the one that makes my dick hard. a really epic story that might actually induce some emotional content. collecting and training monsters. little kids running around haunted mansions busting ghosts. invading Hell and kicking the devil in the nuts. IMO it's five stars from top to bottom. i have heard that some of the later remakes attempt to give characters accents and it drives everyone crazy, so watch out for that.

DQ6 is even more ambitious and tries to combine class changing and monster collection with a sprawling, multi-universe story, but for me it seemed more confusing than engaging.

Too bad DQ3 and 4 sell for like $200 on Ebay and there's no realistic possibility of getting one.

DQ3, 4 and 5 are the absolute pinnacle of the series, although Dragon Quest games are never bad, even the new ones.

But do they get bad remakes

I played all the DS remakes and loved them. I don't get the hate for the accents- they're funny and make the game more charming.

As someone that beat the game without a guide and by blowing the flute exactly once, I honestly can't figure out what you mean by this. What are these spots?

DQ1 is as basic as it gets, there is no "dumbing down". The remake just gives you experience faster, but the original already is almost completely braindead anyway.

Play the GBC remake instead if you're that incensed by a translation group taking credit for their hard work.
