When that plot is so basic its difficult to 'not' rip it off.

When was the last time you played a Lunar title?

I dunno. About 7 months ago I did a EB CD run. I like to play them every year or two, rotating between versions. And basic is good. I like basic. A basic through plot lets you build the drama and characters properly in an organic way.

I've always been meaning to give these games a go, are they good?

hold them as the pinnacle of what makes a good JRPG. Especially the second one.

I'll have to try them out then. Are the PSX or Sega CD versions recommended?

Yes. Serious answer though, both versions are very much worth playing. Silver Star CD shows it age a bit more than it's sequel so the PS1 version really builds off that in a much more favorable way. Eternal Blue however has a lot of benefits on both systems and purists of the CD version really do have a very strong case. But you can't do wrong with either. In fact Id suggest playing both. Avoid the handhelds. Just forget they exist.

Am I the only one that dropped SS fairly early on but liked EB enough to complete it?

I really hope so. Silver Star is great and there's parts in Eternal Blue that are really elevated having played both.

Played both the PSX versions for the first time last year. 2 is now one of my favorite games of all time. It's one of the few games that gave me post-game depression ;_;

I think it was the characters that turned me off. You had a mute stoic protag, an annoying cunt, and a fat idiot as your party. No thanks.

Wow you quit really early. Like maybe play more than hour. Also that fat fuck? HE becomes the craftiest son of a bitch in all of video games.

Is bravely default much like Lunar? I replayed EB last year and still loved it. SS doesn't hold up as well but that's always been my thinking.

The remakes suck.

Silver Star on Sega CD is pretty bad, despite what neophytes will tell you. Try it on the PS1 for a more complete experience.

Bravely Default feels like what it would be like to live in an alternate universe where Final Fantasy evolved to have more tactical and interesting encounters while keeping all of what made it great. Instead of the brand being hijacked for boring, soulless games that have absolutely nothing in common with the classics.

It isn't really much like Lunar at all, other than being very much an anime style traditional JRPG. I love both of them.

SS doesn't get interesting until ~10-15 hrs in. This seems to be true for the remakes as well. You just have to stick it out.

I haven't played this since High school about the year 1999 or 2000

I remember going into an ice cave and beating a dragon?
taking a boat and having jellies?

you meet some kind of witch shes pretty OP better than the fatso

I dun remember the rest. its been 20 years or so. the food was comfy but you gotta stockpile that shit am I right?

About 12 hours into Eternal Blue (PS1). The combat's hardly thrilling (a bit better than SS), but the characters are good enough that I'll get back and finish it soon. Lemima's OMG MONEY shtick is getting old which is a shame because she's gorgeous otherwise.

also, bromides.

The overall story is very similar. The characters are almost 1-1 in their roles and personalities.

Both great games with very different combat centered around multi hits, which feels good man.

I was kind of the opposite. I loved the first one, but the second one felt almost like a rehash with a lot of the ideas that I got bored with it. Also I didn't like Lucia as much as Luna.
