The concept is better developed? What, you mean the objective to bring the head of a commander to a particular room to unlock the door? How is that any different from keycard hunting? Quake 2 had only a pretense of a storyline and elaborate objectives. And it was only further boggled down by needles backtracking and its bland setting.

>> No.5256739

I give Quake 1 the edge overall, but Q2 gets a real bad rap here that is undeserved. It's a good game. Dispite the much slower pace it still manages to have the better multiplayer of the two if only because there's more than one good weapon.

>Level design

It all falls apart when you compare carefully crafted maps from Quake to hub based design that makes you backtrack through the levels.

>weapons

You have every single weapon serving its function in Quake as opposed to something like a blaster which is NEVER used again once you get anything better.

>enemies

Please. Are you comparing Lovecraftian nightmares to generic sci-fi soldier enemies? Also there are pic related as something you fight against which are just laughable.

>music

This is the only thing I'm willing to agree upon. Although Trent Reznor's OST serves its setting very well.

This is the actual wrong answer here. Please refrain in giving Randy Bitchford and Jewbox your money, doesn't matter the cost. Just play it through eDuke32 for free, with tons of usermaps, mod support and of course the Life's a Beach addon. If you want you can pirate World Tour solely for the new episode which is good although not consistently so. When you finish with that one remember to proceed with uninstalling it.

Quake 2 has a locked 10Hz ticrate, which is terrible when you're trying to pull off impressive railgun shots. The deathmatch maps weren't even there at launch.
But its far less abstract design is a big boon for its singleplayer. Backtracking is less of hassle since you can infer the map layout from the environment rather than having to memorize a complicated set of connected corridors.
I can barely tell some of the maps apart in Quake, but I fondly remember visiting mines, sewers, human processing factories, weird alien mainframes, and that space level.

No, not once, not ever. Not in any vanilla id maps. Not on Nightmare skill, not under any circumstances will you ever use the axe, unless by choice, or the blaster after you get the shotgun approximatly 10 seconds into the first map if you drag your feet. I'd argue that it's incredibly easy to only run out of nails.
Unlike shotgun shells and rockets, enemies don't drop them, and the item spawns themselves are pretty limited.

Quake 1 has a more unique art style, better ambience, has more non-linear and replayable level structure, etc. The style, atmosphere and general design of the game are great.

But Quake 2 is still the better game. The guns felt more powerful, the scope of the levels were massive and there were huge sections that were entirely optional, the graphics and animations were greatly improved, there were real boss fights witb a real end boss, and perhaps best of all, the enemies were more varied, less spongey, and felt more satisfying to dispatch. The art style wasn't as memorable and the game wasn't as atmospheric, but in terms of sheer gameplay, I don't see how anyone could say they actually found Q1 more fun. Quake 2's combat and exploration absolutely stomp the original.
