Looks amazing. Just little bit more and we have technology from the CSI - "computer, ENHANCE!". Government agencies probably have already something cool running on huge renderfarms though.
But this is really fantastic. Now we just need to wait and people will generate all kinds of texture packs for various games. Of course it's not always that successful but this technique combined with manual editing here and there will make a huge difference.
Now what I would love to see is that someone going over Resident Evil 4 and making this guy's work obsolete. He worked for years to redo the texture work from scratch. http://www.re4hd.com/

you feed a bazillion low-res + high-res image pairs to a dumb machine to develop an approximation of what pattern of detail corresponds to which low-res pixels and then you can give it images that only exist in low-res and have it extrapolate what a high-res version might look like.

Nothing will ever surpass dedicated craftsmanship. AI-generation for textures, just like using filters or any kind, results in worse textures than redoing them by hand. Look at this image, for instance >>5252068 Right looks pixelated, but left is plain ugly. It doesn't look natural because it was made by a computer. It needs to be redone entirely.

The thing is that the people who claim it looks better seem to have a different definition of "better". I look at both pictures and there's no doubt the latter has more detail. But it is fake detail, and you can tell the textures look bruteforced as opposed to designed from scratch while matching the original aesthetic.

>> No.5255886

it keeps most of the original ascetic, there are some problems but it's good for an early run. It's not like it's a finished texture. The potential is obvious to people with imagination.

Like for training, down sample some SNES sprites to 4 colours. Then run the model against NES sprites and get 16 colour versions.

>> No.5256087

>>5255923
It's because it's in a weird area between completely retarded and super impressive in some small cases.

It's a different trade off
- Low programming time / no programming time (use existing architecture)
- High clean data requirement
- high computational power requirement for training

This is very different than what people are used to in digital programs which usually require high programming time and not much else. So the results are surprising and it's capabilities different than what they expect. It can either be viewed as magical or simple and boring because it is so lopsided in application. Can do narrow things unbelievably if everything is just right.

>> No.5256092

>>5256087
Also of note, this is why it's very useful for retro games. Ideally we want to minimize human time for retro games and we happen to have ML architectures and computational power in droves for such old graphics. It's a perfect fit in many ways (besides pixelart)

Am I the only one who thinks this is bullshit?

I don't think an AI is doing this. It's too creative, the changes are too specific, I don't see how an AI could recognize everything and redrawn it so well. Seems like sci-fi to me. One example is >>5252019, and as >>5252552 points out, it's unbelievable. Has an AI that people are using for retro video games successfully theorized gargoyle biology and understood that it would have veins there?

I don't think this is like ESRGAN or the other AI upscalers that have been posted recently, where it's purely just doing comparisons against one trained database. Topaz first tries to identify what the image is (or parts of the image) and then uses a database trained with whatever the subject is. Like pic related, it identified a skeleton, so it's upscaling the image using a neural network of skeleton images, which means it can add in the appropriate detail.
