Master of Magic

Fun as hell Civ-like (+tactical battles) that lets you go crazy with all sorts of powerful magic, balance be damned.

It also has a Japanese-exclusive PS1 port titled Civizard that has slightly upgraded visuals.

Should I feel pretty pleb-tier for disliking SRPGs with permadeath? I don't like the idea of having to autistically reload if one unit dies - a character dying and having a ressurection/repair fee just feels more balanced, especially if stages get tough enough to decently partywipe. Turn limits or 'protect this one unit' work too.

I've enjoyed Shining/SRW games most, and played a bunch of others like FEDA and Bahamut Lagoon, hybrids in the Treasure Hunter G mould work too, like Energy Breaker. Chill little story games like Monstania and that Tenchi game make cute casual SRPGS, where the fun's in the presentation/dialog rather than difficulty.

>> No.5250445

I love SRPGs but I don't like Shining Force that much. I like Ogre Battle, TO, FFT, and Vandal Hearts a lot, and I'm interested in Front Mission, although I can never bring myself to get very far in those games. I get bored without the swords and sorcery setting

You don't have to restart when a character dies in most Fire Emblems unless they are dropping like flies or you are really attached to that character. You will almost definitely get another character in that class later.

everything but the main problem was that every character within a certain vague group (such as "melee attacker") played exactly the same with little to no variation and the battles are long & monotonous with little strategy required. unless its one of those games where you're supposed to play on the hardest difficulty and nothing else (i played on hard)

fantastic and fun games in almost every regard, they are too easy if you don't play like a retard though

>Front Mission
great games with prety grown up story and setting. the out of combat mech upgrade fuckery can make the games a bit slow and tedious

>Fire Emblem
i dont know what it is specifically but i am having trouble getting into this series

>Vandal Hearts
only played the first game, pretty cool and mature story

>Langrisser
great games, particularly the second. large epic battles, yet rpg elements with the individual commanders, items to use, resources to keep in mind, lots of classes to upgrade, challenging combat and choices to make in later games including dating shit. despite complexity its fast to play. stories are retarded bad guys attack good guys shyte

I remember trying this in zsnes when I was a Tenchi fan in the late 90s. It has a lot of personality which shines through even when playing in a language you don't understand, but man is it short and easy. Worth it if you like the anime and want something that doesn't take super long. I think the title is Tenchi game hen. Like a little chicken.

you PC selection appears abitrary and out of place

HoMM is more of a strategy game and if you have HoMM on it you'd have to add all sorts of games like Master of Magic, Age of Wonders series, Disciples etc

but your list is supposedly about Tactics games and then you have a truckload of important PC titles missing and that would burst your list

and why the fuck is Worms on there?

I suggest you take out the PC part and keep it to console tactics (and the occassional strategy game on console) and leave the can of PC tactics (and strategy) for another day

Multiple classes.

Those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

Is FM3 actually secretly good or something? I dropped out early cause the protag was too much of a moron for the story to possibly go anywhere more interesting than the usual GRR ADULT MAN BAD, THE TEEN REVOLUTION IS NOW schlock that JRPGs love.

I mean it's got loads of REALLY good style, but if the story and the tactics are dumb, then this is a hell of a tedious genre to serve style through.

>> No.5254496

>>5254449
The protagonist in FM3 is supposed to be an idiot. Most of the plot is about terrorism and superweapons and international espionage. The battle system is both intricate and involving and completely unraveled and undercut by any amount of correct grinding. This is still quite satisfying because you really get to mess your enemies up, you really deal them some devastation. They get fucking owned.

The music is great. The main character is never a big part of the plot he just shows up at the right time to foil master plans while mostly being motivated by better characters than him.

The point of every front mission game is that war is bad. war is terrible. it's also mostly economic. However, giant robots are fucking awesome.

However:
>The battle system is both intricate and involving and completely unraveled and undercut by any amount of correct grinding.

Am I reading this correctly in that you mean grinding trivializes the battle system? Because I don't really like that.

Tried it almost a year ago. It has smarter AI than the original. Most cheap tactics are not usable. The Paladins are not invincible because they lose Magic Immunity.

This is my favorite strategy videogame by far.
Can anyone recommend me some retro RTS with as similar gameplay to it as possible?
That isn't warcraft?
I'm fine with 4x games too as long as they have some semblance to bfme and are easy to get a grasp of.

I tried HoMM2 the other day and put it down after 10 minutes, really really didn't like how that game worked.
