Adventure Island is literally a port of Wonder Boy for SNES with some changes. The original is the best.

The original also isn't the best, Adventure Island has better music.
Anyway, it depends on what you prefer. I prefer Adventure Island series because they're great platformer-action games. The Wonder Boy games, like Dragon's Trap and MW4, are tansaku, which is fine but not my cup of tea.

They both aim to do different things, sometimes crossing their lines a bit where some MW/WB games are more arcade-style and some AI games are more adventure-style.
I fucking hate this artwork so goddamn much for making a bunch of kids think there was ever some sort of rivalry going on between the franchises when that was hardly the case.
If anything, they're like brothers who swap clothes every so often.

Also, some versions of the games seem to refer to the Master Higgins/Takahashi Meijin character as "Capulina" (or affectionately "Capulinita"), due to his resemblence to the actor Gaspar Henaine Pérez.
