I'm getting my Saturn modchip in the mail soon, I'm so excited.

Besides obviously burning games, what else can I do with it, homebrew-wise?

>> No.524421

You can mod your Saturn with it.

>> No.524434

You can sell it and get something else

>> No.524443

Is there any perk to using a modchip over the swap method, besides convenience?

>> No.524467

>>524443
The swap method slowly damages your saturn.

Anyways, theres a TINY saturn homebrew community. Nothing really other than a GBC emulator and a saturn cartridge slot emulator (for games that used that shit)

>saturn modchip
where the fuck would you get that? I can't even find a place that sells a PS2 modchip anymore

>> No.524468

Your laser won't get fucked up.
As far as the homebrew community, there isn't much available.

Get a DC.

I never got this. I've used swapping for the life of my Saturn (10+ years since I first got it) and it still works just as well as it did when I got it.

Just don't be fucking rough and it won't ruin shit.

You mean a RAM expansion thingy? I don't get it, how will it work like the real thing?

>> No.524808

While we're on the subject, what's the best method of burning Saturn games? I have good quality CD-Rs, but my burner doesn't seem to be able to burn them slow enough because the Saturn fails to read the discs most of the time.

>> No.524850

>>524808
what speed? I think 2x-4x is considered the best

>> No.524853

>>524808
And what do you mean by 'most' of the time? Does it work only some of the time or not at all?

>> No.524915

>>524850
It won't burn CD-Rs that slow, unfortunately. The slowest it'll go is 16x.
>>524853
It rarely works, like maybe 10% of the time and only a couple of games work.

What program do you use to burn it?

My laptop is relatively recent, and IMGburn allows me to burn around 2-4x. Bottom line, 16x is WAY too fast for a Playstation/Saturn. You should probably use an old PoS computer with an old CD burner

>> No.525023

>>524992
I'm using IMGburn, too. Maybe I'll try finding an old CD burner on eBay or something.

>> No.525045

Even a yard sale/CL would work. Put out a wanted ad for it

>> No.525051

The homebrew is a free 400 dollars for not having to buy Panzer Dragoon Saga.

>> No.525137

>>525051
Well, $40 for the chip, and $30 for the Action replay save cart. So I'd reckon more $330

>> No.525939

>>524992
I have a modded PS1 and Saturn, and burn games at 16x on Verbatim CD-Rs. Never had a problem. Works for Dreamcast, too.

>> No.528216

>>525939
Interesting...can someone explain what exactly burn speeds are (more than just selecting '16x/8x from a dropdown) and why they matter?

>> No.528248

>>528216
basicly a x1 or x2 cd drive is going to have a hard time reading a disc burned at x48 but they can read x16 just fine majority of the time.

>> No.528264

>>528248
Yes, I know all that, but WHY? What about the physical properties of the disc differs that makes it impossible for a different drive to read?

>> No.528329

Speaking of image burning, I use a BD burner for everything, and while 16x is the slowest for me, I've never had problems and all my games run super smoothly.

>> No.528338

You people are retarded. The reason people recommend burning at a slow speed is because it's less likely to corrupt the data that gets written, this isn't really an issue on modern burners unless you're maxing their speed or some shit.

>> No.528369

>>528338
Thanks for being inflammatory for like, no reason whatsover.

No problem you limey cunt.

>> No.528418

You realise that the saturn can easily play copied games without a mod-chip right? It doesn't even have a very difficult swap trick:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWL67ztgGoI

Modding a Saturn is pretty pointless. All you need is one shit game you don't like to serve as a dedicated boot disc, and you're all set.

>> No.528428

>>528418
Fuck doing that. Yeah sure, there's a 50/50 chance that doing the swap trick won't entirely fuck up my drive motor, but I'd rather not take that chance. It cost me $41 in total, easily the price of a pizza party or something.

Plus if I ever wanted to sell off my Saturn in the future, advertising as modded gives me easy leverage to jack up prices.

>> No.528427

>>528418
Swap tricks are terrible for the disc lasers.

>> No.528451

>>528427
I'm pretty sure that's a myth. Though there is a definite real danger of damaging the drive motor as >>528428 said.

>> No.528469

>>528451
I literally just said that.

I used to do the swap trick for my Playstation, and I felt like I was going to break the damn thing every time I did it.

Honestly, $40 for peace of mind and the ability to play all western Saturn releases isn't a bad price.

>> No.529740

>>524915
>>524915
Burning slower is not unconditionally better, that's a stupid urban myth. Burning a disc way slower than it's nominal speed is almost as bad as burning at the highest speed every time. Try burning at half the max speed of the discs. 24x for 48x discs.

>> No.532270

>>529740
nah mate, it ain't no urban myth. My Dreamcast will only work with burns burned at 10-12x. Anything higher results in a corrupted disc (by corrupted, I mean that it will not load up at all).

>> No.532379

Man, I wish my Saturn wasn't back in Florida. I need to ship that out here.

I've had some great times with that system.

Trying not to bend that tiny chip was fucking intense.
