I doubt most Thiefags actually played this game when they were kids. It was an obscure PCuck game that only sold 500k units compared to MGS's 6 million+. It's just zoomer hipsters thinking they are cool for liking an obscure series and hating a much more memorable and successful one.

I wouldn't have a problem with them if it was just that. The problem is that Thiefags are OBSESSED with MGS fans and keep comparing their game to it constantly even though they're nothing alike despite technically belonging to the same genre. The first MGS might not be that good as a stealth game, but it has other merits. And it's not like Thief is perfect as one either when stuff like pic related can happen. It has a lot of neat mechanics, sure, but they're not implemented very well.

As someone who loves Thief, I do have to admit that shadows make guards a little too easy to avoid, especially if you're on a quiet surface. You basically have to be touching their dick in order for them to become aware of you.

Of course Thief isn't perfect. However, purely talking stealth, Metal Gear Solid is a joke compared to Thief.
>It has a lot of neat mechanics, sure, but they're not implemented very well.
I don't think this is the case. Or better said: I understand where you are coming from, but I don't agree. The changes you suggest would infuriate a major amount of people.

This is a stealth game so it is natural that the perfect playthrough would consist of ghosting through the levels. Anything else e.g. blackjacking a guard, being seen, and more, would break the ghosting and cause guards to search you indefinitely. Because let's be honest: if the cops see me breaking into a house, they won't stop looking for me until they find me, as opposed to saying "oh well, I guess it was nothing". The issue with Metal Gear Solid is how simple and inconsistent its mechanics are. For instance, walking on water is a no-no (good), but running around has no consequences (bad). In Thief, you have to control your speed at all times. You can run around but if you are close to a guard, he will notice you.

My only major issue with Thief, aside of the supernatural elements which I did not like, had to do with the shadows. Especifically how inconsistent they were: some very visible areas provided complete stealth, whereas some obscured areas let you open to be seen. It made stealthing on the run very difficult, because you never knew, just by looking at it, whether a shadow provided protection or not. Metal Gear Solid's system didn't have this problem because it was based on line of sight as opposed to shadows (correct me if I'm wrong, though).

Metal Gear Solid probably has other merits, but I just find it funny when a game is praised for anything but the gameplay. It honestly bothers me that people complain about movies with gameplay nowadays, when people like Hideo Kojima where the ones who popularized this to begin with.

>> No.5241302

>>5240220
>>5241297
And this is not me saying "we shouldn't praise good stories/good storytelling in videogames", but I simply don't see anything remarkable in Metal Gear Solid, purely from a gameplay perspective, to praise it so much. Especially because the story is convoluted as hell, interrupts the flow of gameplay, you know the drill. I think that Thief: The Dark Project (haven't played The Metal Age) is probably the best stealth game ever made and it will be sometime before it is surpassed, if ever. This is because most of the things that made it so good are nowadays considered "bad" or "too hard", like not having a magical radar telling you where enemies are (and by extension, showing you their movement patterns), or a quest compass, or a detailed map, or linear levels, or being able to kill your enemies with ease, or refilling your health with ease, not being able to run all the time, etc.

It really is a game that sort of peaked the genre, as opposed to other games that had yet to peak before the masses made it impossible to make that sort of game again. Like Fallout for cRPGs, which hit all the right notes just in time before the consolization of western RPGs.

Thief gameplay is bad. Inferior to deus ex, ultima underworld and system shock.

>Did you mean quest marker? Cause Thief does have a compass.
Yes, I called it quest compass because a lot of first person titles (particularly Bethesda's) incorporate the quest marker into the compass.
>>5241462
The whole idea of stealth is to move undetected. Waiting is part of the charm, just like it is to move quickly once you see an opening.

I actually once quickly checked through the old TTLG forums (the original Thief/Looking Glass Studios fan forums) about the topic of Metal Gear Solid. Their reaction:

"What? Who hate MGS? It's actually a pretty good game it's just doing things completely different to Thief."

"I've never really heard the comparison between the two - they're both so different. I can't remember anyone in 1998 comparing the two."

"There's one cringey metalfag on youtube who compares the two constantly but that's about it."

I'm paraphrasing here but you get the gist. All the oldfag Thief fans couldn't give a shit about comparing the two. It's mostly only the new fans who do that. Besides I once watched an internet argument between an MGS fan and a Thiefag and the mgs fag was clearly the retarded one who wouldn't listen. Not to say all mgs fags are like that - there's sure to be Thiefags who are exactly the same but I really don't think it's because of their choice of game. I think a lot of people just like to be obstinate argumentative loudmouths on the internet and will go to blows over any topic no matter how retarded.

Besides Thief 2 holds up way better. Thief 1 has some great moments but it does have issues - great atmosphere though, it really does feel like you're slowly descending into a hellish, surreal madness the more the game goes on.
