Was there really any purpose for winning points? For example, in Space Harrier (for the SEGA System) points had such little value they didn't bother with ones, points were added in units of ten, and awarded for literally doing absolutely nothing. And this was back in nineteen eight-six.
In any case, did anyone really care if your top score was twenty-four million, five hundred forty-nine thousand, seven hundred fifty?
As if anyone goes to a club and approaches a hot girl and says "Hi hot stuff. Guess what my high score for After Burner is? It's six quadrillion, four hundred twenty-five trillion, eight hundred thirty-three billion, nine hundred seventy-five million, one hundred twenty-six thousand, eight hundred fifty-four."
She'd say "What, that flight simulator for the Sega Video Game System? The maximum score attainable is only twenty-two million.

They're a numerical representation of how good you did.

We know what they are, but no one cared. So what, then, was the point?

Score systems are mostly used as a way to teach players by giving them a numeric feedback about how good was each action. They can sometimes give the player some extrinsic reward, but they are meant to be intrinsic by themselves.

People cared enough at the Arcades. It was a ploy for you to sink more quarters beyond simple enjoyment.

iirc you get more points in Space Harrier by letting a boss stay on the screen. You can probably also get more points by dying than you would by no-missing the game.

Games that aren't purely about scoring points (like Pac-man etc) usually have stupid scoring systems.

Some games are played to get a high score.

Games with good scoring systems (i.e., deletes your score upon using a credit) can make it fun to compete.

You get points for the distance you travel, retard. You're never truly doing nothing because you're always progressing forward. So two people who game over at the same spot of the same level will have the same base score, modified by how many enemies they each killed.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Beating a boss quickly lets you potentially avoid their patterns, so it's fair that you would be rewarded for that.

The weird thing now is that, now that global point systems are gone, people end up making up stuff like speedrun categories.

Just see points as money you earn in the game but you just didn't find the secret shop yet to buy stuff with them
