Atari 2600 thread. Usually not much to talk about so here are some ideas:

1. What was the first Atari 2600 game you played?
2. Where did you play it? Feel free to get nostalgic and descriptive.
3. When was the last time you played?
4. Who was the king at Combat in your house?

>> No.5228196

I never played the actual console but played a lot of the games through compilations and such. If there were some way to easily compete with other players' scores, I'd be more interested in picking one up.

Kaboom! and Crackpots are probably my favorites.

Do emulators actually recreate it well? With the way the controllers are, and the console switches sometimes controlling things, it feels like it would be hard to get an authentic feel via an emulator, and I hear the flashback consoles are garbage.

Never even tried Atari. Grew up playing INTV though. Still some of the most fun I've ever had playing the vidya

>1. What was the first Atari 2600 game you played?
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

>2. Where did you play it? Feel free to get nostalgic and descriptive.
I was in a friend's basement in high school. I don't remember whose, but the Atari was their dad's. This would have been in the late 90s, when PSX and N64 were seen as the standard for video games. I couldn't get most of the games to play, and I didn't know about cleaning the cartridge contacts at the time.

>3. When was the last time you played?
A few hours ago when I got home. Was on the fence about selling Vanguard, Frogger, and Pole Position so I gave them all a play to help me decide. Definitely selling Vanguard, but I think I'll keep the other two.

>4. Who was the king at Combat in your house?
Sadly no one, as we did not have an Atari growing up.

Oops, sorry, reading too many posts on /biz/ lately has decreased my IQ. It's AD&D, one of the two AD&D games on that system. Screencap I just posted is from the other one, which sadly I didn't have as a kid

1. Galaxian
2. Home, where else?
3. Awhile back, I haven't hooked up my RF only consoles yet.
4. Me, always will be.

Wrote a game called Attack on Normieland for the console. Had a few people test it, they enjoyed it.

The flashback's aren't perfect, but honestly they do a pretty good job. The controllers are decent and other than the menu they feel pretty authentic. They aren't too expensive either. IDK if there are any with paddle controllers, but they add a lot, especially with warlords.

I don't know if they are any good, but you might look into the retron 77, I think it takes an sd card for teh roms. Atari 2600 is pretty damn easy to emulate so I doubt there would be any real issues, but again, research it because I don't know myself.

Adventure

On an emulator. I'm a bit younger, 23 now. Played a lot of Atari games on an emulator probably in the early and mid 2000s. It's what got me interested in games that weren't relevant/new. Influenced me more than anything else probably. We couldn't afford a ton of games or anything so my brother threw a lot of ROMs and emulators on my PC. I had always been into SNES games since I had an SNES since birth but playing Atari games was the first time I had to readjust expectations and fell in love with games I didn't realize existed. Learning to appreciate simplicity and understanding how to enjoy things that were foreign to me.
>3. When was the last time you played?
Probably a couple of years ago

The "magic" of flipping switches is great and all, but the only thing emulation really misses is the paddle controllers.

1. Dunno I've been playing Atari for so long

2. My house had about 70 or so games and would pop em' in and out for hours

3. About a year ago

4. My Dad without a doubt

>> No.5230321

>1. What was the first Atari 2600 game you played?

I really can't remember but I think it was River Raid or Popeye.

>2. Where did you play it? Feel free to get nostalgic and descriptive.

The first time I played was at home. It was probably around '85-86. I was 5-6 at the time and had been to a garage sale with my mom. I forget how much it was but probably $20 or so, had about 20 games. I distinctly remember my dad trying to hook it up to our old console tv. It was the type with the spade connectors for RF, had the little switch box with said connectors. I remember him being nervous that it would somehow destroy the TV. Dad was technically minded on mechanical things so I always found this funny, though with the price of console tvs then, I understand. It wasn't a throw away culture, I mean you probably expected to have the same TV for 20 years, so to destroy it would have been bad. Anyway, all went well and it was quite a bit of fun playing with mom, dad, and sister.

>3. When was the last time you played?

Couple of months ago, played that noah's arc game that was a "lost"/unpublished game.

>4. Who was the king at Combat in your house?

Back then it was either me or my dad. Nowadays, it's my father in law. He's got some fucking 6th sense on combat. It's eerie.

Pre-Crash Atari was arguably the best video game company ever.

1. probably either frogger or maze craze

2. in an empty apartment my parents own that is attatched to my childhood home. i remember that whole apartment was like my own little club house. it was awesome and a lot of space for a small child to have to himself. i also remember having a huge bulky ass white computer in the corner that i would play old games like lego island on (i played atari way after its time, im only 21 but it was one of the systems my dad handed down to me along with a n64 and NES)

3. probably about 6 months, i recently made a new /vr/ setup and turned it on for nostalgia

4. probably me, just because i play the most games in the house

At a friend's house. We played that shit so much I had a headache. My friend's mom gave me an aspirin, and that's how I found out I'm heavily allergic to it.

>3. When was the last time you played?
Never touched one to play it since then, but I have emulated in time and time again.

Nobody except me played an Atari, and I only heard of Combat much later.

1. Probably Adventure or Pitfall
2. Off an old console in my mom's best friend's basement.
