Atari 8-bit emulation... What does /vr/ use: Atari800, Altirra, Atari++, or something else?

>> No.5226297

>>5226272
I only Atari800 on Wiixl for 5200 so far. And use Stella (many platforms) and Wii7800.

>> No.5227979

>>5226272

I use Altirra for EVERYTHING Atari 8-Bit.
I currently only really played Alley Cat and Defender, but i have this weird Atari 8-Bit demo from Poland called "Numen". It's actually pretty good and really graphically advanced.

>> No.5229731

Why even ask this question? /vr/ is generally very bad at discussing retro computers.

>> No.5229752

>>5229731
Maybe he wants to introduce more retro pc discussion?

But yeah, if you have a younger audience (even this board is a bit young for it) the talking will be hard since many here would have, at best, used these machines as kids, and even less likely that they did real computing with them. The problem is further exacerbated by the high population of Americans here, who were even less likely to be using home computers at this time, particularly on a games board.

I guess maybe /g/ would be a better fit.

It’s because the games have literally zero redeeming qualities. Anything before the NES and the entirety of britbong computers only appeal to nostalgia.

It was mandated by law in France that all TVs have SCART, but mostly because SECAM was such a terrible broadcast standard.

Also on the Apple II and it seems like the company (Quality Software) didn't last too long. But then again, the Atari 8-bit went into the grave in 1985 anyway.

Atari 8-bit is still the best way to play Montezuma's Revenge, the SMS version notwithstanding.

They probably gave up. Trying to port that onto the Atari at all would be a huge challenge. With only four player sprites and 128 characters, it would be tough.

>> No.5235586

As far as NTSC software, about 85% of the library is 1985 or earlier. Later stuff is virtually all budget PAL tape games, excluding the Indian Summer the A8s had in Eastern Europe from 1990-93.

Although to be fair, there never was a true PAL model of the A8 chipset anyway and PAL machines just display everything with huge borders and the artifact coloring feature of hi-res mode doesn't work.

I don't think there's more than a handful of scrolling platformers on the A8s.

Did the Atari 8-bit series ever have a mouse officially released. If so, Why no Maniac Mansion or Labyrinth, not even for PAL countries only?

>> No.5236665

>>5236638
There wasn't any mouse and there was no Maniac Mansion, in fact the A8s were the first platform that LucasArts dropped support for Also MM would be really difficult to pull off with the A8's hardware and probably require a 130XE which hardly anyone had anyway.

>> No.5236675

>>5236665

>> No.5236696

>>5236675
MM on the C64 uses char mode for all background graphics and each character is a single sprite made triple height with a multiplexer. This is not viable on the A8 because it has only 128 characters and the sprites are too limited. It would essentially need bitmap mode and soft sprites (maybe a player sprite for the cursor) but even then everything would look very bland and monochromatic since the playfield is going to be limited to four colors.

I don't like the C64 Shamus, I really don't. For one thing, your shots are tiny which makes it frustrating to hit enemies and in general it's very cheap compared with the Atari or the PC versions.

Satan's Hollow. The C64 port is a classic, this Atari conversion, done by CBS Software, really shows the limitations of the A8 versus the C64, particularly in terms of sprite capabilities. It was never actually released (most likely thanks to the video game crash) despite being completed and presumably the programmer leaked it to a BBS.

>> No.5239468

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=61&v=oj6HzcaePaw

Commando for the A8 was definitely finished, they just never released it. It's not a bad conversion, but like most A8 games they used up all the player sprites for the MC and the enemies are soft sprites made with character graphics. The music doesn't touch the C64 Commando as you'd expect.

>> No.5239495

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9yEmSK3EUI

The NES version of Commando I'm not a huge fan of. It's not programmed too well (lots of bugs and graphics glitches) because it was one of the earliest games Capcom made for the system. Also it adds some extra fluff like rescuing the prisoners from the dungeons that wasn't in the arcade game.

>> No.5239505

Also some people a few years ago made a C64 Commando Remastered which added in all eight levels from the arcade game (the original was missing some stuff). Rather odd choice but it was already a pretty good conversion to begin with, so why not just take it and add what they missed due to (likely) time constraints.
