Give me your opinion on RetroAchievements while I have a smoke break

>> No.5221304

Some are great ways to breath some war in old games.
Some don't even fucking work or reward you for shit you'd have done by playing the game normally anyway, like beating a boss.

>> No.5222660

I think they are a fine idea. I mean if you have played a game inside out and need a new tilt then sure why not. Before they were manifest in the fashion we have now gamers especially regular couch co-op n vs's bros would be setting each other challenges and have house rules etc... This just takes a standard to a wider audience

This is basically the only thing achievements are good for. Giving incentives to do things you wouldn't have thought about or which you didn't think were even possible otherwise.

Pretty much this. Achievements are great when they require you to do something difficult or really odd that you'd not normally do. But they suck if they're all just "complete the game" and other such common things.

I said difficult or odd things, not retarded things.
What fun is there in getting an achievement if you unlock it by simply playing the game normally? An achievement should be rewarded to you for doing something difficult or really strange, not by simply completing the game. What's the point of calling it an achievement if you're not doing anything difficult to achieve it?

The minor toxic people like more show their ego about having more points than others, make other people demotivate for the first objective : have fun . These wanting top leaderboard just want their dingu sucked- oh they don't know nothing valuable could be with them when being in the grave.

>> No.5223536

I like the idea, but its implementation is far from perfect.
Since they're made by users, it's always boring shit like "beat the first level", "beat the second level", until there's a turbo-autist adding something insane like "beat the game without getting hit once", "get all your characters to level 99"...

>What's the point of calling it an achievement if you're not doing anything difficult to achieve it?
you are using an emulator on your pc, you could cheat in thousand of ways, just think about save file manipulation, it shouldn't be something you use to show off to other people imo
I see achievements more as a way to look at a glance what games you have played, to try different things you could not have known (like alternative ending, completing using another character) or just to keep track of your backlog
I'd like a system like smash bros trophies, possibly unlocking some trivia about the game

>> No.5225284

>>5223259
The point of achievements unlocked by doing mundane things you'd do anyway like beating a level or whatever, is ostensibly to allow other players track your progress through the game. I'm not opposed to them existing, but it sucks when they're the only achievements there are.

RAVBA and RAP64 are the only two on site emulators i would even consider using for normal gameplay. The rest are riddled with tons of issues, especially RAGens. RetroArch is easily the way to go if you actually want to get involved in this mess, as it's a third party software made by made by people who actually know what they're doing.

Too many of them are lazy. "Beat level 1". "Beat level 2". "Beat level 3". Like seriously? If you look at actual modern games you have creative achievements like "score 30 headshots" or "kill 4 enemies with one grenade", they're mini-challenges designed you to teach you how to play better.

And of course, the only games with good achievements are the most popular ones, Mega Man, Mario and Zelda and Castlevania. And even then, only the most popular entries.

Like, for a second I wanted to dust off my Aria of Sorrow for a second playthrough using RetroAchievements? But the achievements have NO interesting new challenges, it's just 100%-ing the game, and I already did that on my own. Why fucking bother?

Like, I'm currently working on a challenge run of Sorrow that only uses Knife and then Whip Sword (when you get it), and I'm considering a run that only uses Knife, period. Those would make great achievements, and using these underpowered weapons really make you appreciate that under all these RPG layers, there's a rock-solid platformer with interesting enemy patterns. But you won't get that from RetroAchievements.

>If you look at actual modern games you have creative achievements like "score 30 headshots" or "kill 4 enemies with one grenade"
Even in modern games, a lot of them are "beat X level" or "100% the game". The last game I remember getting all the achievements in was the Steam re-release of Jet Set Radio, where the only really strange challenge was beating the game without getting grabbed by an enemy (which was more of a pain in the ass than anything, since it was sometimes hard to tell if the enemy was grabbing you and there was no way to tell if you failed).

>the achievements have NO interesting new challenges, Why fucking bother?
This can be attributed to 3 gay ass factors that will likely not change, or will depend on the person doing the set of achievements for that game, the community has a weird fixation towards regulating an achievements "validity" so to speak, so anything too hard for the babies will likely will get revised and thrown into a bonus set because its "too much". Similar examples of this are a sub-weapons only run of castlevania 1.
2- The diligence of the creator.
Its a community based project, so what you get is really hit or miss, I've seen some developers who care for the game enough to do some challenges and expand on the game even if its not an entry-level popular game, sometimes a developer will jump into a game that already has achievements and will add on top of it to enhance it further, Holy diver comes to mind as an example.
On the other end of the spectrum you get the most retarded autists you can imagine that hoard sets like crazy and will put no effort whatsoever into them, the Atari 2600 unfortunately is a prime example of this, due to how simple and fast it is to make achievements for it.
3- the shitty tools for achievement development.
achievements are created by inspecting the game's internal memory, figuring out what memory addresses have values that can be used and then use an extremely limited tool to make a list of conditions so the achievement can work, creating anything complex requires the developer to think cleverly about the memory addresses that he already has. That's why the developer's diligence is so important, doing a sword only run would actually take some effort (finding the values for using the sword and figure out how to make it so it doesn't trigger when its not supposed to, plus the fact that achievements do not look up conditions between sessions which would likely make it nearly impossible to prevent cheating the run)

Sorry for the rant.
