Pros
-Beautiful graphics that still manage to provoke a sense of awe and wonder even years after it was made
-one of the best OSTs in all of retro fandom.

cons
-Convoluted story that makes no sense and for all its density still somehow manages to be cliched, and trite
-Insane roster means that characters are more like pokemon and don't really get any narrative development beyond a core group of characters
-battle system is not hard, but tedious and makes grinding a chore
-should have been a stand-alone game like how Final Fantasies are not directly connected to one another, rather than trying to shoe-horn in character designs and plot devices from a game with a completely different art direction.
-having a furry for a villain is almost as inexcusable as Kid's accent.

The only thing that really bothers me about CC is the absurd amount of characters that you can collect. Instead of focusing on a select few characters and writing a story that revolves heavily around them, we ended up with a game with two characters with decent stories and a fuck ton of sub-characters with shitty development.

Definitely one of the weaker PSX RPGs. I don't like the island motif; I could tell the developers were trying to convey with the music that such a locale is peaceful and you should long to live in such a place but I think that sort of environment would be miserable. The element system was alright though.

>> No.5219719

I wanted to love this game. I tried my best back when it came out to endure it's terrible battle system. I was pretty into the music and some of the characters, but the grinding got so bad I quit toward the end of disc one.

Beat it sometime last year and I absolutely adored it. It was just such an aesthetically pleasing adventure, I have a hard time believing anyone really disliked it for any reason besides it conflicting with their own concept of what a sequel to Chrono Trigger should have been like.

It really is a technical marvel.

Chrono Cross is a fantastic game.
Including the story which I guarantee kinda stinks in the West because it was hard to translate.
You can't have a game like this that has fantastic visuals, music, gameplay, and pedigree, and have a shit story. Any problem with the story it because of typical bad translation stuff.

Despite this, the translation wasn't too bad, and the story not too bad either, for what they're getting at. The story conveys the concepts of fate well, how changes can affect fate and leaving one to ponder if fate or free will matter. It's due for another playthrough from me. Think I'll play Trigger first just to warm up. Don't think I've ever played Cross on my PS2 over component. Should be nice.

Chrono Cross would Unironically make a great Gatcha RPG.
Shit ton of character to roll for (third of which are pretty hot), Magic system that lends itself to heavily building up characters. Setting where new islands or even new parallel worlds can be thrown in easily to keep the game interesting. And the ending already sucked, so that fact that it never has a real proper ending won't matter.

There you go square. Make a good old Chrono Cross phone game (and charge 20 dollars on top of the in game fees you stupid bastard. I want my limited edition naughty christmas Leena.

Total mess of a game. All they needed to do was to remake CT for the Playstation. Story, setting, characters, total mess. A lot of the key staff did not return.

CT had three directors, and one of them was Takashi Tokita. He went on to direct Parasite Eve, and that game feels more like a contuation of the CT style battle system. CT was expanding and improving a bit on the turn based battle system, however this was all discarded for the sequel. FF7 was huge, so they just went with a generic FF style system.

Meme answer by an idiot. I'm well aware of that image. CT doesn't have a single character that looks like Vegeta. Toriyama has like 7 faces he recycles over and over again, and Crono is a clear Goku variant.

I blame two things.

1. While the battle system is unique, monster stats are too low to take advantage of the no grinding attribute of it. In particular, they almost never make physical tanks that can only be hit by elements at all meaning you can brute force with normal attacks for most of the game.

2. While there are a couple more connections to Trigger than some bring up, they are still very few.

The combat system is pretty garbage, doesn't really take advantage of anything it actually tried to do, so in the end it boils down to brute forcing your way out of everything. While the story shits itself bit before the end of the first disc

Honestly, I don't mind the connections to Trigger that much, but your first point is what makes this game unforgivable to me.
You have such a wide array of elements, fully customizable per character, and you never have a need for them.
Also I don't like the battle music at all. The music sounds great on its own but it doesn't fit the battles at all. Specially bad with bosses, and double specially the plot-relevant ones.

The plot is trash, specially the shoehorned environmentalist crap (those hi-ho bastards specially. They are the ones with fucking tanks but humans are the bad guys? Fuck! the human settlements aren't even INDUSTRIALIZED! You'd expect that shorta stuff in FF7 or something, not here where human towns look like god damn vacation spots, and I don't think they know about the labs at all (and if they did they should probably worry more about Lavos or the fucking evil dragons). Nope let's genocide fairies and guilt-trip the player for no reason.) but I could overlook that if the battles were any good. This game needs some sort of hack that makes battles a lot more tactical. Maybe an Ancient Cave-style hack. Sadly PS1 hacking isn't quite there for that kinda advanced stuff.

It is unfortunately true that you might as well just always use physical attacks, unless the mechanics of the boss necessitate manipulating elements, or they're just resistant or something.

Even on a regular run and not NG+, I can have Serge and another powerhouse so ridiculously strong by the latter third of the game that I can cripple bosses within four turns spamming 2-2-3. Elements take an entire 7 for one spot of damage, so it's just not worth it unless you have a seriously magic-oriented character or the skill has some particularly good side effect, or you're pretty sure you can kill an enemy by running into the negatives. Although if you are using the 3rd character for this, you can just go back to the other two and it doesn't matter that the 3rd needs to recharge. But again, in most cases I don't even need that person, unless maybe it's Fargo/Kid/Mel or another utility character. Probably the best option.

Regardless, CC is a nice game in terms of aesthetics. Everything looks fantastic, and the music is Yasunori Mitsuda, so how can you go wrong (aside from the battle music)? The large roster is always cited as a "downside" because people aren't able to view it as simply a curiosity. I don't know if they saw a character like Poshul or Mojo and thought to themselves, "When am I going to see their dramatic backstory?!" Like, some of these characters are just there for the aesthetic/humor and for messing around in battle, stop trying to ascribe meaning to everything.
