What the fuck was wrong with Sega back then? Why did they talk shit about other companies so much? Did Nintendo ever 'responded' to them in such a manner?

Mortal Kombat was an icon back in the day. It set the standard for arcade fighting games and spawned dozens of imitators. It had a huge impact on early 90's pop culture - to the point where boomers were freaking out and having moral panics over it because they thought kids were going to turn into ruthless killers and thugs after being brainwashed by the game. Congress even had hearings over it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversies_surrounding_Mortal_Kombat

You may not like the series, but it was THE most important 90's fighting franchise and had the power to move consoles.

Sega was desperate, either in Japan (developer intimidation) or the US (antitrust lawsuits against nintendo) to get some of nintendo's lunch, so anything went.

Sony was just as desperate but it actually worked out for them so you don't hear about it as much.

From a worldwide and longterm point of view, yes. But in the US at that particular rime MK was the bigger hit. And yes people bought a Genesis based solely on the censorship. I was one of them. I had a Super Nintendo, found out about the censorship, felt absolutely betrayed, asked for and got a Genesis for my birthday that year. Which turned out to be a good move in the end, as a 2-console idort I got to enjoy stuff like Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star simultaneously.

Your problem is that you're treating these companies like they're individual humans with feelings, when they're just corporations trying to make money in any way possible. Sega was doing all the anti-Nintendo ads because it tricks idiots into thinking there's some actual beef when Nintendo was undeniably more popular and successful. It allowed Sega to bootstrap their own popularity and personality by constantly attaching/comparing themselves to Nintendo.

I won't lie, that kind of marketing was very fun, and made the console wars era into a very exciting time. Nevertheless, around the middle 90s it started to become tiring and stopped being fun or amusing.

Probably because it became less about playful banter and more about genuine hatred for the consoles you weren't "loyal" to. When everyone knows that you should be playing all consoles to experience their exclusive games.

Exactly, that was the problem. The fun teasing ended up morphing into real hatred and resentment around the middle 90s. Magazines around 1995 or 1996 started publishing really angry reader letters unlike anything ever seen. That was the end of the fun.

If it worked then they would do the same today. If anything it gave their advertisers publicity by mentioning them.

The only advertising like this that's ever done these days are clear comparison tables, because the public are not dumb enough to be manipulated by smack-talk. That Neo-geo ad is plain ridiculous.

MK2 wasn't censored on SNES and even the creator says the SNES version was better. I guess if you want to go back and play the very first MK instead of the superior sequels the Genesis version is a little better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=litzOf8YH8E
