Emulation makes games which are rare or unreleased easily accessible.
Since I’m not able to play games as often anymore, it’s nice to have emulators on my phone to play while commuting.
RetroAchievements is also neat since it adds extra challenges to games which you might have been done with otherwise.

Best thing ever made for the videoludic industry (with some sad exceptions, but everyone knows that certain emulators are better than others). Even someone like me who owns the original hardware can't do without emulators, especially because i travel a lot and i can play every game from a single device (PC). Though i won't lie, i don't own every hardware for every emulator i have. If i'm interested on a single game or maybe two, it's useless to squander money for that alone and a whole console too, especially if that money won't finance any company whatsoever and will go to scalpers instead. I don't mind if the thing isn't 100% accurate, i value the experience alone (actually i got the hand of things, so with the right emulator, bios and options, you maybe won't have said 100% accuracy, but i bet it's something like 99.9%, no big deal).

a fucking emu you say? they're cool, they bring back the attention to the game itself and the experience the gaming provides, not building the hardware chain. They also provide an alternative for people who have a tough time having access to hardware, which can be for different reasons.

If you can play a game on its original hardware and on an old CRT, the feeling (and hyper-low input latency) is undeniably superior to an emulator. But emulators have loads of other benefits and features, such as graphics enhancement through resolution+shaders+filters, save states, playing games that you don't have physical access to, playing modified roms easily, and the list goes on.

Basically I avoid emulators when I can, but they're often so convenient and I'm so lazy that I use them pretty often.

I'm trying to get into more retro gaming. Not because I played current video games or anything, I just need some escapism right now and I want your advice /vr/.

I had no video games growing up. I've been looking at Nintendo systems and found the N64. I want to try Legend of Zelda games that I've heard so much about.

Should I go buy an N64 console and controller online and try it out or just try to use this Project64 emulator I found online?

Not them, but yes, buy a real console because N64 emulation is a joke. You don't want to be enjoying a nice pleasant diversion from reality just to have to randomly crash on you, whereas the actual system was/is very reliable. Oh, and spring for a "gold" cartridge for Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time because it's the most carefree version with interesting errors and other oddities and tricks that were removed from later versions.

There's a fishing hole in that game that is better than most other retail games.
P.S. Yes, you can catch the loaches too.

My view is if a game is still available from it's original developer or publisher then I buy it like that and only emulate if it's more convenient.

If the company is still around but they don't have the game for sale in any way, I emulate it but fibd something else I can buy from them to support. One of their new games, a t-shirt or whatever. I don't love his games, but it's a method I got from Tim Schafer who says it's his view on people emulating his company's work.

If the company is defunct etc then I just plain emulate of course.
