The stars are more like a translation of the flagpoles/goals/end blocks from the 2D games, so no, It's not a collectathon, at least like how Spyro and Banjo are.

>> No.5212567

Dunno. Never played it. It 64s anything like Sunshine, then nah. Not a collectathon.

>> No.5212583

Yes, SM64 is a collectathon.
>>5212562 had a pretty good point, but I believe the definition of a collectathon is the necessity to collect, not the amount of stuff you can collect.
You go throughout multiple worlds to reach point A and B several times, sure, but you're not following a set path, you're collecting enough to clear a threshold.

That's also why it's entirely a platformer exclusive subgenre because if you spread that definition too thin, Zelda could be considered a collectathon.

>> No.5212589

No. Maybe if the game kept track of every coin you collected.

Tl;Dr

You don't collect flags/coins/items in og mario to progress, it's just to rack up points, like most other games of that era.

>>5212521
Rare didn't develop it, so no.

>> No.5212643

>>5212521
Absolutely.
Nonlinear design, progress blocked by how many stars you've collected, star given when you collect all the red coins on a level, star given when you collect 100 coins on a level.
It's just like Banjo Kazooie and it only seemed different because it wasn't as well designed. BK's pacing was better because it let you stay in a level to collect as much as you want, while SM64 kicked you out each star to accommodate the level changes it couldn't do on the fly.

No.

Jesus no.

No. You get a single reward of a star for performing an objective in Super Mario 64. A collect-a-thon is a game where you collect numerous xx/(total amount) items. When you enter or exit a world only one item remains accumulated in SM64 (stars). In Banjo Kazooie if you exit a world and re-enter a world all your numerous doodads you collected are still there (iirc the music notes do reset though).

*collect and retain numerous xx/(total amount) items.

Yes. Why the fuck wouldn't it be?

You think an exploit from a speed runner negates the fact that sm64 is a star collectathon? Are you really this dumb? I mean technically you can beat the game with no stars, but it in now way is this a faithful representation of how the game was meant to be played. Here's your (you), I guess.

>It's not a collectathon, at least like how Spyro and Banjo are

Banjo is less of a 'collectathon' precisely because it doens't force you to exit the level whenever you get a star.

>> No.5215128

>>5215124
That's retarded.

>> No.5215132

SM64 was the fucking coining game of the collectathon genre, we wouldn't have Banjo or Spyro without it, you dense fucks

>Banjo is less of a collectathon than Spyro or SM64
why were you raised this way?

Mario 64 was a mistake.

2D linear Mario > 3D non-linear Mario

I’m sorry, but it’s not a collectathon.
