I remember my brother and I spent two days downloading it over dialup back in the day because all his friends were talking about it at high school.

It was our first Doomvania and it blew our minds. Lots of nostalgia with this game, recently found an old expack CD for it called "Extremeties" lying around the house from about two decades ago.

It shouldn't have been named "Quake." I know that they supposedly couldn't find another name for it; That's why you hire real fiction writers and not just your neighbor downstairs who hammers out fan fiction movie scripts.

Having written that, it was technically superior to the original but the story.. story has never been iD's strong suit. For me, Q2 got eclipsed by Unreal 1 & Half-Life 1.

quake 4 and quake 2 are better than quake 3 because both had good singleplayer and quake 3 had a dumbass shitty "balanced" (more like boring) 9 weapon roster and was mostly multiplayer only
And for that matter
If multiplayer was all that mattered
DAIKATANA IS BETTER THAN QUAKE 3 BECAUSE THE WEAPONS IN THAT GAME ARE ACTUALLY FUN TO USE
side winder > quake3 rocket launcher
earthquake gun > quake 3 bfg
ion blaster > quake 3 plasma rifle

if you said doom 64 i would have agreed, it felt perfectly fine. but playing quake 2 64 requires a lot more effort due to y axis aiming/no autoaim and a joystick camera that works in a different way to modern shooters entirely (the auto centering)

right hand dpad? the fuck? You know you can configure the controls right? The left hand dpad is move=left stick move, analog stick look=right stick look, trigger=fire, shoulder button=jump. All of this can easily be mapped to a modern controller. Look spring can be turned off.

>> No.5214557

Ignore the psychopath who insists you use the d-pad to move in N64 games and trying to pretend that everyone knows that's the way to play. The best way, backed up by many, is c-buttons move as almost all the speedrunners use (speedrunners are worth referring to because they play it a LOT and highly competent players). If you want to use d-pad move, fine go ahead, but it's not what's generally done.

Antithetical but both great games.

Quake 1 had the best atmosphere, monsters and fast paced gameplay.

Quake 2 had the best sound effects, music and actual mission objectives.

Quake has the best mod (Arcane Dimensions)
Quake II mods suck, but the main game is extremely satisfying.

I think it's overall more consistent in quality. Meanwhile, Quake varies in missions and I think mission 2 & 3 are forgettable. Plus the enemies are better done in quake II. Its kind of odd, quake 2 is the most standard fps game i could ever think of but i still love it a lot. i guess its fresh compared to modern shooters.

To be honest I love the intro and the backstory(there is one!).
I loved the retro futurism of Quake 2. Whole aesthetic. That you have futuristic weapons and also pretty old school like and old looking(for the time in story) shotguns, smg's and a chaingun. Hated the quake 4 quake 2 reboot, and I didn't even touch Quake Wars even when I loved Enemy Territory...
To me Quake 2 is unique the same as Quake 1. I love oldschool scifi's like Aliens, Treks(apart TOS, and not kelvin upwards), old SW, over fantasy so thats why Q1 is for me inferior, but it's still important and good game.
Also I got into pc gaming when Q2 camed around.

Thats why in 2018, like twenty years late I made a mod to somehow fix and patch the game to standards of next gen FPS'es like Half-Life as much as I could for now :). I'm not finished and let's say I just started programming in C.

And what space marine game is better ? Doom3 ? Ok. Elite Force was awesome.
I think the Q2 theme is great and would be whole lot better if expanded properly. Too bad ID was busy making technology and forgot about making universes or rather thinking it wasn't important.

Because I really like the theme. And retexturing and remodelling and shit making it candy like just brakes it.
You can actually upscale textures without actually make the game looking like a different game.
Also you can do 4k todays... When the game released a lot of players had 320x240 software only mode on reasonable frame rate.

Porting to a different engine is pointless with like 5fps(afair) vertex animations.

You never understand mods like this.
Well Imagine you're at ID in 1997 and you're lead game designer. You have the knowledge and experience of the next 20 years. What would you change/add?
I would add *some* features of next gen games. First of all I broke the predictability of the point and click game...
That you can die quickly from basic weapon such as blaster when hit in "head" even if you have loads of armor.
To make all weapons powerful(some obviously more) in a realistic non silly sense. In original game blaster, shotgun and machinegun ware pretty useless. Why not make them powerful enough to make a decent fight against other weapons wielding players ?
Btw Shotguns now have like 1300(+/- 25%, or -, can't remember right now) units max range, damage scaled. Is it bad ?

How can you compare atmosphere of a surrealistic mishmash to a sci-fi mission objective driven shooter ?

Comparing what they should become, Quake 2 has no chances of beating Quake 1 atmosphere despite great sfx.

You just like the theme more. It's similiar to LEXX that it is surrealistic, and compare LEXX to TREK. It's uncompareable, they are totally different things, still being sc-ifi shows.

Well Q2 was a successor to Q1 by multiplayer standpoint and serious players are from the multiplayer community rather then single. They are based on the singleplayer theme, but mainly multiplayer.

How many times you can play singleplayer ? Many times it's not even 1. Multiplayer has a lot more replayability.

I think it's not either right or wrong that they just added +1.
They have iconic names. Imagine implications when they would have different names. Having like almost the same name makes the brand more strong and recognisable.

Instead of crying that Q2 doesn't have it's own name give an example. I assume you have major Q2 backstory and major sci-fi knowledge. I'll try too! Let's see what can we get up with.

I think Quake could have been an anthologic series and Quake III could have a different setting than previous games.

Never heard of that stuff, but it probably just looks like the Windows region setting. There's no actual way for it to tell. I bet you could switch that American Windows region, install and switch back again.

Worst thing about this game is that it gave us Quake 4, fuck that entry into the Quake series.

I kinda liked Quake 4. Was it great? No. Was it complete trash? No way.

Stroggification scene was dope.

Honestly, always felt Doom 3 was better of the two.
