>Nieces and nephews come to spend the weekend at my place
>All having a blast, watching movies, eating pizza, wrasslin' in the back yard
>Starts to get dark out, ask if they wanna play some vidja
>They all seem enthusiastic
>They don't have any consoles or a home computer. Just tablets and smartphones
>Put in some classic multiplayer games
>"What is this? Is this like Mario?"
>As the game starts, everyone seems to be having a good time
>Someone touches an enemy and loses a life
>"Uhm... I don't really wanna play this anymore."
>All the rest of them immediately lose interest and want to do something else

I don't understand kids anymore. I feel kind of bad for them, but I can't really put my finger on what happened or why. I'm not gonna try and push them in to something they don't wanna do, but it just feels like they didn't give this enough of a try.

Anyone have an similar experiences? Or advice for sharing my hobby with this kiddos?

Yesterday, my nephew saw pic-related sitting on my shelf and wanted to play it.
Pluged it in, and started playing Ms. Pac-Man. I played one round to show him what to do.
>Let's play a different game.
>"W-wait, the game's not over. Do you want to play?"
>No, let's try another one.
Started up Mappy. He walked against a door for a minute, and a mouse got him.
>What? How was I supposed to know what to do? Different game.
Played Galaga. No interest in that one either.
But then he played Pole Position for like, half an hour.

To be fair, taking damage just for TOUCHING an enemy was always a bullshit video game trope.

Like, think about it: you and the enemy are both enemies. Why does the one only damage the other? It should be like antimatter, where you both damage each other, or like real life where you can only hurt someone physically by manually attack them.

>> No.5206663

>>5206573
Just have them play some games wherethey compete directly against each other without any computer-controlled opponents that can hurt them, then? There's enough games like that out there.

>> No.5206964

Well, to be fair, unless you're giving them arcade games, it kind of is a dick move to expect them to just play and enjoy games with no access to the original carts, cases, and, most importantly, instruction manuals.

Yeah, it sucks that they give up quickly. But retro games and modern games have much different methods of easing noobs into continually attempting to improve.

>> No.5207037

Its ADD or mood disorder. You give a kid a phone and it ruins their attention span early on. With an old game you have to at least pay attention long enough to survive. With modern game you barely ever die. The new game devs don't want you to lose much because then you stop playing, and you won't pay for DLC or whatever shit. Today's players are retards.

>> No.5207047

>>5206653
This always pissed me off too but it also added challenge and reward to not have fairness and still triumph.

I usually resent today's games even though they have ideas that improve on older games, but also have an undue amount of angst and politically correct ideas.. go figure the industry is largely yups creating or boomers running who capitalise on yups and gen z.

>> No.5207064

If the kids want to try playing old games again, then introduce them to something else. Or, if they want to try the same game again, then let them play it again. If they want help, they'll ask for it.

Back in the day, we'd play games sometimes, then quit, and finally come back to them. While it's true we'd play the same game over and over again, we'ld eventually get tired of it.

Just give them a little time, that's all.

>bitching about that site
In this case it's just a complaint on the formatting style, which is called reddit-spacing. It's just how language works, dumbass, when a label sticks it sticks. Although in this case I think the tripfag's paragraphs were long enough to warrant spaces. There's no hard convention.

As for the use of derogatory reddit, it's less about hating the site and more about choosing the most appropriate insult for some brand of stupidity. For various reasons, Reddit has a reputation for being very shallow, conformist, and verbose, with plebian taste, "nerd chic" and a terribly lame sense of humor.

A post with those traits might get labeled reddit. Or someone will try to label a post reddit but fail. In that case it's up to you, the enlightened reader, to tell the difference.

The actual reddit site is large and diverse, of course. But, if you visit you'll almost certainly see those trends I mentioned are far more prevalent than they are on 4channels.

>> No.5213847

>>5213676
Well more and more I suspect you people are either paid shills for the site or just straight up bots.

It's already a riddiculous claim that anyone using double spacing is because of that place. But then when anything is said the response is always "go to Reddit!" Even when it makes no sense like asking to stop talking about the site it every post, it's just the same line again. I guess it makes sense they'd be trying to drum up traffic through advertising, but it's still fucking weird.

People people don't like games and some people are pussies. It sounds like the pussy gene is dominant in your family tree. FWIW I have a lot of success with kids of all ages enjoying games at my place. Some of what I think are key factors: I have a lot of people over with multiple setups, so people with different likes and skills can team up an play what they like. I have handhelds and shit like psones with an LCD for autistic losers so they can sit in the corner playing with themselves instead of ruining the party. I let the kids play whatever they want even iff it's"reeee not retro". The best gateway game to retro vidya is SSBB. It's easy and fun enough and once kids see how shit it is compared to the predecessors they open up to older stuff. The exception is RPGs. Aspies play with themselves in the corner. Having more than a couple meme consoles or le retron is is big plus. Many kids have played NES games. Few kids have even seen a G&W let lone played one. And don't forget lots of cheetos and greasy shit so they can really fuck up your controllers.

Now the new generation has parents who shove ipads and phones to their kids to shut them up so if they see a new games it like whatever. When I was very young seeing a computer in a persons house was a rare and curios thing. I wont hold it against them, when I was young many adults whined that the kids were spoiled because they played games and especially religious parents had some weird bullshit beliefs that they would spread to others such as thinking games cause children to misbehave. Not everyone has the same expectations and experiences as you do. If you try to convince someone to enjoy the thing you like they're going to have greater expectations than if they found it themselves, and a greater disinterest when it doesn't match it.
