What are some niche games that are incredibly fantastic and don't try to appeal to any audience?

I've decided recently I'm done with any game that is trying to be inclusive. I want real quality games that only some people 'get' and try to understand their appeal myself. I have come to realize I have bad taste in games and want to know what are true quality games.

Pic related is my best example. I know this is something posted a lot but I don't know much else. I want to know what games have a sense of 'soul' in them and you can tell they put their heart into it.

well if you want real quality you'd either play Tactics Ogre or go to a more rewarding lifestyle in general, one involving leaving this site forever.

WOTL has some additional content, nicely animated cutscenes, content missing from the US version (sound test, for example) and adds onion knight and dark knight as classes. If you have a PSP, go for it (and some fix patches).

Has a new translation but people are divisive on it.

reworked translation, more faithful to the original but they decided to go for a more theatrical, flowery translation that might put you off depending on your taste, some people feel its out of place

when comparing to FFT, most people would be referencing Let Us Cling Together, the Playstation remake of the Japanese only third (?) SNES game in the series. (LUCT for short) Matsuno was hired by Square after making the series TO make Final Fantasy Tactics. You may want to play the PSP rerelease as if you're not very into the genre the PSX/SNES releases have some archaic mechanics that might not be "for you".

What makes the game "soulful" is true branching story paths, missable characters/alternate timelines for characters depending on your choices (bosses in some, allies in another), a lack of JRPG BS (until the end) and being based on real-life internal crisis leading to a more bleak storyline.

That's about it bruv. Use archers on high ground.

Most old-school SEGA games should fit this bill, with the one major exception being Sonic.

Gonna do a new FFT run, what fun builds would you recommend for 4 generics, 2 males and 2 females? So far I have my favorite lady Monk/Thief build, and a Wizard that may either invest in Samurai or Mediator (might depend on how I build Ramza). Not sure about the males, I kind of want to go for a pure physical attacker and a hybrid of some sort. Priest/Lancer and Chemist/Knight sounds like loads of fun.

A ninja with throw item and item is probably better than a ninja with martial arts and punch art, which is still probably inferior to a ninja with martial arts and basic skill which is even then a watered down version of Ramza exploiting Scream with ninja and Martial Arts which isn't even close to as completely bananas as fielding a Wizard leveled as a Mime using MA up and Draw Out

>> No.5181191

You forgot MP restoration. That alone makes Punch Art worthwhile.
Also, doesn't apply significantly to vanilla FFT, but Secret Fist is very useful in 1.3.
>>5180648
>poorfags
If you can afford unlimited ethers and kikuichimonji's then it probably means you've been grinding enough that it doesn't matter what abilities you use.
>less effective and versatile
Punch Art is more versatile than Item. Item is basically Phoenix Down, status recovery, and low-level healing. That's all really, and it only ever works on one target at a time. Stigma Magic and Chakra can both hit multiple panels (which you can exploit if you have situational awareness and think ahead when making tactical decisions.)
>Draw Out
Scales from MA(not PA) and is an advanced ability that requires access to katanas to use. Even if you CAN afford unlimited Katanas, they might not even be for sale yet.
Draw Out is a great secondary ability for a Magic-user
Punch Art is a great secondary ability for a Physical attacker.
They aren't competing for the same slots unless you don't know what you're doing.

>> No.5181217

>>5180667
>A ninja with throw item and item is probably better than a ninja with martial arts and punch art
This depends. Most obviously, on the character's brave. A high-brave Ninja with Martial Arts and some +PA gear probably doesn't even need any secondary abilities to be the most effective character on the field.
Chakra is better than Item if you're relying on casters, especially for maps where you can easily arrange your party to take advantage of it. A ninja's speed and movement means that it'll be easier to get into position for Chakra's as well.
If you don't have casters, Chakra still holds up well against Item because it's a multi-target heal.
> better
> inferior
At this point I think you're really way way too hung up on inferior and superior. The game is well-designed enough that it's hard to make these kinds of simplistic comparisons with most abilities. Obviously there are some exceptions like Math Skill. But...
> a Wizard leveled as a Mime using MA up and Draw Out
You deploy 5 characters in most battles. There's no reason you can't have a Wizard + Draw Out, a Knight with Punch Art, and a Ninja with Item all at the same time.

Great genre games is what you're looking for?

(Warning, not all my recomendations will be /vr/)

>shadow of destiny.
It's a hard game to describe, but I love it. You are murdered, and some random deity type thing grants you time travel powers to prevent your death. You succeed in delaying the enevitable, and thus, must spend a bunch of time, time traveling and working shit out. You get to visit other time periods and it's just a cumfy, cozy kind of psuedo horror/thriller game.

>Galerians
It's not for normies, for sure. It's the most survival horrorie survival horror ever made. It has severe tank controls, and combat is just... not fun, to say the least. What lies beneath that, is an actually fairly great game.
You play as a kid who's been experimented on, and can now take drugs to use psychic powers. If you can stand the controls and like prerendered backgrounds, it's fucking great.

>Dino Crisis
Yes, I like action/adventure and horror.
Anyway, Dino crisis is basically RE turned up to 15. It's longer, harder and has more strategy to it than RE does.
You have lots of potential for challenge runs as well, as lots of ammo and healing items are found in locked boxes, and there's a dart creating system. So you could limit or challenge yourself in many abusive and amusing ways. It's also got awesome atmosphere, and easy mode in DC is about the same challenge as hard mode in RE3.

>kuon
Not tetro even slightly, but fuck it. It's another survival horror where you use spell cards to combat japanese fairy tale demons. It's dark, gory and one of my all time favorite games. Be warned that combat can take getting used to, and this shit is EXPENSIVE, so just download it.

>Nightmare creatures
Now bear with me. It's not the best around, but it's a quite excelent action game. Combat has depth and maneuverability totally lacking in other PS1 games, and monster AI is quite aggressive and fun to fight against. Only downfall is that combo timing can be a massive bitch.

Very fair - I'm not sure if it makes me a further contrarian to see Tactics Ogre pushed so much by hipster on the internet who rate it so highly as a negative. It creates a clout around a great game and might get more people playing it, but sometimes you seen it thrown around as the new "secret handshake".

I just wish this cult status would lead to further games in the series, not just an endpoint of inbred fans yelling down. But we saw what happened with that mobile shit so I'm doubted it'll ever continue.
