It just sounds better. But maybe Samus Alan sounds better in the reality where that was the choice the localization team went with.
Either way, here's another translation that's actually different from the Japanese. The name of the Varia Suit in Japanese is just バリアスーツ (Baria Suutsu) or "Barrier Suit". The English team chose to translate the Ba as a Va in this case (Which is completely fine, as the Ba/Bi/Bu/Be/Bo sounds are often used for V sounds in Japanese) and made it Varia instead. In my opinion, it sounds much better and much cooler with a name like "Varia".
Also, in case you didn't know that already, now you understand why the Varia Suit name is so unique, but then gets upgraded to something as normal as "Gravity Suit". And just to complete the trio, I looked up the Power Suit name just now, which is simply "Normal Suit" in Japanese, which is pretty funny to me.

I've heard that Aya Brea's name is not translated right. Google Translate turns her name into Aya Blair. Now personally I like these quirks of Japanese language. They add diversity to names with their remixing of English terms, merging them, or passing them through the L to R filter to create new words.

Gradius series is likely taken from "Gladius" (the sword). Barret is taken from "Bullet". So on and so forth.

It creates new, names that are different enough but don't sound outrageous.

In DMC, the real name nero was translated as nelo and never got fixed. You just get to far to go back and fix it. Yakuze actually did fix its mistranslation and it just looked jarring as hell because 5 games of wrong translation with the 6th and final using the right one.

I'm pretty sure both Nomura and Sakaguchi have stated that the names in Final Fantasy games and Square games in general are heavily biased towards names that sound sort of western and exotic to Japanese players but intentionally are either uncommon or near misses of real names because the games aren't meant to ever take place in the same universe as our own and each protagonist is supposed to be a unique individual.
