Obscure PS1 thread?

Last night I discovered a few cool games.

>Hell Night (PAL eng)
Dungeon crawler/puzzle/horror by Atlus? Looks like a cool weird game.

>Chaos Break (PAL eng)
RE1 clone that looks to be more action-ey but is classified as a horror title.

>Dark Tales from the lost soul
no translation unfortunately but wow this game looks great. It's an FPS that's quirky as fuck. I think the reason for a lack of translation is due to no subtitles actually being present, it's only voiced. Someone would have to create their own text routine and make it work in the game to enable english subs. Same idea for why Twilight Syndrome never got translated - it's not as simple as finding text and replacing characters because the faggot developers didn't add subs.

>Countdown Vampires
Blatant RE clone but it has vampires. It looks like a mediocre game but still worth a play. The enemies are pretty much vampires instead of zombies.

Forgot to mention Firemen 2. A co-op game about being a fireman doing a fireman's job: putting out fires. This one happens to be voiced only as well, with no subtitles so it's impossible to translate unless inserting a custom text routine.

None of these are "obscure" except from Dark Tales

anyway,

>Vampire Hunter D:
Devil May Cry, or rather Onimusha, before its time
quite goods once you get the hang of it, gameplay is all about dodging before having an opening to attack rather than spamming everything. Plus you have to keep the balance between the different gauges. Obviously inspired by Resident Evil especially the way cutscenes/endings are trreated.

>Soul of the Samurai
Again, Onimusha before its time, but more about attacking everything freely. Obviously inspired by how RE2 works notably with the 2 character scenario system.

>The Note

First person adventure survival horror, except there is a shop. The main character is voiced by McCulloch, who voiced Chris in Resident Evil 1. One of the "puzzles" including the use of rope is quite bs, so if you're stuck and have a rope in your inventory, check a FAQ.

>...Iru!

First person adventure survival horror in between Clock Tower and Echo Night. Jap only and requires you to talk to a lot of NPCs so good fucking luck.

There's at least two others like that.

>Deep Freeze
>Hard Edge (TRAG)

Both are about special forces, have 2D backgrounds 3D characters, tank controls. Both are about shooting terrorirsts. They're kind of the exact same game. Deep Freeze was a budget title though. Hard Edge is sorta interesting, but isn't very good.

Hard Edge is more anime, and you have only one character with a gun. Everyone else is melee. And melee really works well.

Japanese only looks like, though full English voice acting? Nice.

This looks like a cool game. Has there been any other game with a perspective like that which has periodic blinking? That's a nice little touch

Hard Edge is pretty cool for what it is.

Deep Freeze seemed really cool at first I could never get past the 2nd level, even on easy.

Note, this is obscure games, not neccesarily good. Deep Freeze is kinda bad, and Hard Edge is super interesting but still not very good. I think it has a cool premise and style. Would love to see a sequel.

OverBlood

Interesting-ish game given entirely 3d adventurey things were few in those days, and the slow unraveling of the plot twists are nicely done, just could've done without the 'combat' if you can call it that, and any camera bar third person. Definite so-bad-it's-good game, enjoyed watching Retsupurae laugh at it.

Amusing fact: the OverBlood 1+2 lead programmer and director (Akihiro Hino) later formed Level 5. OverBlood 2 has some ambition from the first hour or so I've seen of it - still a clunky adventure game with bad jumping, but a very well put together world with a lot of detail reminiscent of later Level 5 games. Have meant to check it out - it has amusing Brit VAs, too.

I'm not sure that's obscure, there used to be many threads about it before /vr/. The game itself is pretty tedious and boring once you figure out how the monster works, but there's a very nice segment near the end. On the plus side, there are several ways to beat the games, depending on your sidekick. the game doesn't mention it, but the girl of the beginning has a hidden (?) power to randomly make the monster disappear when you press square, I think

>Neorude
A very nice point & click action rpg with a unique action and experience system. Japan only but you can manage just fine; the sequel has way more dialog, though.

The impressive thing about this game is that it was being developped at the same time as Resident Evil; so all the similiraties between both games comes from the Alone In The Dark influence and the time period the games were made in.

By comparing the 2 you really realize everything Resident Evil brought on the table, while Overblood sticked closed to AitD, like having the shitty melee combat.

What's amazing is how similar the story is: scientists experiment gone wrong --> zombies.

However Overblood at least brings true 3D on the table, afaik it was the first survival horror in true 3D, and being given the choice to switch between 3 different type of camera angles was pretty novel too.

>>5175743
by "true 3D" I mean full 3D with environments, unlike the pre-rendered backgrounds of AitD and RE.

Retsupurae is useful for those kinda of interesting games, which aren't good enough to actually play yourself. It's the only time I watch LP's.

>>Chaos Break (PAL eng)
>RE1 clone that looks to be more action-ey but is classified as a horror title.

It's also a sequel to an arcade game called Chaos Heat, which is basically "Resident Evil: Arcade Edition". The PS1 version IS a survival horror game that tried to be too close to Resident Evil and lost what made the original fun in the first place.

It also is not a well made game in general.
