Take this webm for example, this is Shin Butouden on the Sega Saturn, the quality of the sprite is REALLY rough, but it was kinda okay with composite cables on a CRT in the 90s, if you try to just emulate without anything on of it is EXTREMELY rough and it kinda kills the experience, but with the GTUV50 shader you get a similar effect on the sprites (another game that goes well with this shader is the 3DO Yu Yu Hakusho).

They're essential if you're playing low res games on a HD/Flat Panel display. Good shaders are customizable so you can tune them to your liking.
Also you can't play retro games on a modern display via emulation at the correct aspect ratio without shaders.

I admit that I like scanlines since that little bit of separation between pixels space can actually make the spritework look 'rounder' without actually having any significant blur.
The problem is, I don't actually remember seeing scanlines in my childhood. What's closest to my memories of NES is the shittiest shader retroarch has in the ntsc folder.
Maybe I just had a bad TV, or didn't sit close enough to see the fine details.
