I´m playing this for the first time and I´ve been enjoying it so far (apart from the fact that it takes forever to get in and out of the menu to save on my PC). Is it just me or is this game extremly fucking hard? I played and beaten pretty much every notable retro FPS, but this one is just kicking my ass on "Bad"-difficulty. Enemies annihilate me within seconds and are often hiding behind doors...and it´s not like I´m trying to play it like Doom or Quake either, I´m trying to take it slow.

Good: guns blazing
Bad: careful
Ugly: sniper mode

>> No.5168060

It would be a bit better if enemies actually had to do an animation for their attacks. The first boss is an utter pain in the ass on the hardest difficulty because you have to hope he just lets you kill him.

This game ranges from bland as fuck to outright bad.

I have no idea what's the big deal about it. There are much better "2.5D" FPS released in the same timespan that got shit on for the very fact they're not "full 3D" while this bland as fuck game got praised hell and back.

Lucasarts must have sucked a lot of reviewers' dick I'm telling you.

Play the game always crouching. Even the manual said this. Now enemies will be less deadly.

It's surprising that there weren't more cowboy FPSes.

yeah its pretty hard, but you get used to it. Just save often.

Just got this too, I'm thinking of restarting on Good just so I can go through it without dying to two shots

Not even Blood was this unforgiving

That's just how the game works. Everybody is a glass cannon. Adjust your playstyle accordingly. Always crouch when around enemies, always expect somebody behind every corner, etc. It takes a level or two to get used to.

The theme is unique for an FPS, and the gameplay is good. Also it had a fantastic score and pretty cool fully-animated cutscenes.

Agreed. The only other game I can think of is Call of Juarez, but that's definitely not retro. I guess developers thought that a game without crazy weapons and enemies wouldn't be interesting?

Even in Outlaws, the weapon selection is kinda small: revolver, lever-action rifle, single barrel shotgun, sawed-off shotgun (which is pretty shit), double barrel shotgun (which is a straight upgrade from single barrel), knives and dynamite.

Enemies are "dudes with a gun" with two major variations: dudes without shotguns and dudes that will one-shot you with a shotgun. And tarantulas, I guess.

One thing I remember about this game is it said you can have multiplayer matches with 256 players but they recommended against it as "computers were probably not powerful enough to run the game well"

Anyone wanna host a game sometime soon?

>> No.5171924

ive probably played this game more than 20 times and i always die by the guy hiding in the cellar in the first level. granted ill beat it one day but i have no idea what to do and always die in that section. its the part where theres a bunch of boxes and a guy hiding in a corner that can nearly one-shot you.

>>5171924
The boss? Crouch behind a box and pop up very quickly to shoot him. The bosses have a little more health than mooks but a couple shotgun blasts is still enough to kill them.

>"2.5D" FPS
well yeah, it used dark forces 1 engine, around the same time dark forces 2JK came around with real 3d, but outlaws was still fun to play, its mostly single plane arenas, so the tech deficiencies arent that important

>>5167869
revolver secondary atk, super fast, you can surprise most enemies, kill them and hide, before being fired upon by third parties
