Why didn't the Doomvania subgenre catch on?

The Undervania genre killed it.

you can say that about a lot of Saturn games

Doom on its own is a -metroid style exploration on the part of its level design, just with the keys/switches instead of abilities.

Hexen puzzles were terribly designed that's why the -vania part didnt catch on.

Because Hexen is a pretty unexciting game.
Strife is better, but not perfect, and nobody played it because it got sandwiched between Duke Nukem 3D and Quake.

You just reminded me the first time I got quietus as a kid, felt so pumped that when I faced the heresiarch I went head on, perfect distance, so the sword impact and the projectiles hit him.
His reflective shield was on though so I exploded on the spot.

Using vania as a suffix, is the most zoomer thing you could possibly do.

Because it actually predated Doom. If you think about it, Ultima Underworld was basically a 'Doomvania', and if earlier dungeon crawlers had more advanced engines, they would be indistinguishably from 'Doomvanias' themselves. The original concept of Doom actually involved RPG elements as well, but those were scrapped to deliver an experience purely centered around fast-paced action.

because hunting for switches in a labirynth full of samey textures sucks

thankfully deathkings of dark citadel put the Doom back into hexen

hexen 2 is a bit better in that regard but sometimes it's hard to tell if something you did changed something in the level and where like the hidden shrine that opens a random ass door and it doesn't tell you

Because Doom had a big focus on blending action and navigation/exploration/dungeons.
Doom 2 failed to focus on the latter part, while improving gameplay by adding more weapons and enemy types.
Hexen and a lot of Doomclones really fail to make as compelling maps as Doom had, reducing the greatness of them as games. The same is to some degree true for Quake, where the maps are not that great.

people stopped making new ones. there were like 2 steam greenlight games that will never be released that got green lit

making assets is more time consuming because of more angles things have to be represented from so most wont bother . big companies would rather just use meshes and indie guys seemed to have mostly died off in a event we will know little of even decades later potentially

If we're talking seriously, about shooters with a metroidvania world design... Because nobody wants to backtrack through old areas, that are either empty, or have the same enemies respawn. That's the same reason why levels got simpler and more linear over time (e.g. Modern Warfare levels are glorified corridors, while Wolf 3D levels are labirynths).

People expect interconnectivity and puzzles from action-adventure games or platformers, while historically pretty much all FPS games were pure non-stop action with no real time to think.

If you ask me, this kind of design COULD make a resurgence in something like Portal or Mirror's Edge, because you already spend some time on thinking.
