Can PowerSlave DOS get some love? The DeHacker mod just got updated recently, there's a save editor + many new quality-of-life improvements such as improved grenades throwing + disabling that annoying giant wasp idle sound.

I got a glitch testing this new version that I never got before. Sometimes the game simply doesn't autosave at the end of a level, so be prepared to lose tons of progress. i'm 99% sure it comes from dehacker v1.5 so I'd just stick to 1.4 for now.

Been playing Powerslave DOS after finishing the console version. Pretty good game, cool art/setting & solid combat. It's not as interesting as the console version since it's just a standard Doom clone. Although it shares the annoyance of lacking quicksaves.

Thanks for the bug report. Forwarded it to the author. It's probably caused by this new tweak [Fix replaying level checkpoint load], so try disabling it in the mean time.

Basically there was a bug where if you tried to replay the level right after finishing it it would start you at the last checkpoint in the level, instead from the start, this tweak attempts to fix this.

>> No.5163341

I already told him. Apparently it's a bug with the original game and it just never happened to me before using dehacker v1.5 despite playing the game like 20 times on that install before.

>> No.5164013

>>5163341
Okay, seems like the issue is that the game saves ONLY when you beat a level for the first time, basically if you load your save, replay an old level then quit, your progress will be lost. It's a vanilla bug. Cheater (the author of DeHacker) has already found the relevant code and will try fixing it.

Well the bug I just described is definitely real and most importantly reproducible. If you figure out how to reproduce that other bug we might get around to fixing it too. But yeah, the game was rushed and is REALLY poorly coded in the first place, so you shouldn't try to put the blame on the modder (like you did in your 1st post) unless you're absolutely sure.

Also what memsize did you set for Dosbox? Try 64 if it's lower.

>Not actual retro
But it is the original definition of "retro". Something new made in the style of old.
This board uses the shafted definition of "retro", the one that calls actual old things "retro". This 2nd definition probably came from people not being able to make the difference between new things made in the style of old and actual old things.
Point is, both definitions are valid; and as far as this board's rules are concerned, such exceptions are allowed all the time.

Chill out man, you make it sound like I'm trying to shit all over the thing. I reported it to him in the first place and I've been trying to help, I even made a map that's just an empty room with the exit level sprite to make testing easier. You have to plan your way up to the ship if you pistol starts indeed. It's not easy, but that's what is expected from the penultimate level. It's a different, more puzzly approach. And the thunder storm is awesome. Swimming in a thunder storm at the open sea is dangerous.

>>99% ugly ass textures everywhere and basic architecture

lelwut? Fantastic layout and architecture. No ugly details like in many ship levels including that sorry ass Redneck Rampage ship you posted. This is how a tanker looks like. It's not a luxury ocean cruiser. Texturing is great too. The most invalid part of your post.

>a thousand doors with autoclose and the most loud and obnoxious door sound the game has

This.... is actually valid. Longer autoclose and less annoying sound would have helped. The only weak part of the map.

>that part with toxic waste, you're guaranteed to take some dmg unless you know the map by heart, especially if you wanna do 100% and kill the Octobrains in there

Welcome to the penultimate level of the game. Like the start with the weather storm, you're challenged with something else but fighting the same enemies. This idea had been done very well here, much better than in Queen, when it was just lame, linear run.

>really bad mini Battlelord fight at the end

Actually, blowing him up with pipebombs is extremely fun.

There are so many things to do in this level, no wonder it was the most polished map along with Dark Side with long history back to LameDook days.

There is nothing awesome about random and or forced environmental dmg. There is also nothing "challenging" about it, it's just purely random, unavoidable free dmg because they thought the lightning looked cool.

Texturing and the texture themselves could have been better, even for a tanker. It's just grey and puke colours everywhere. Even Critical Mass brings a lot of different colours.
Also, what's up with the invislbe water.

The layout is amazing but I stand on architecture being basic, it's very square for the most part.

Derelict is a typical Allen Blum level with all its flaws and strengths. These kind of ""messy"" gameplay moments also appear in the likes of Death Row, Toxic Dump, Fusion Station, Occupied Territory, Lunar Reactor, Mirage Barrage, Golden Carnage etc. None of these maps are easy to play and all have at least one annoying moment it shouldn't have. Dark Side is an exception, conceptually grand level with a good gameplay flow is extremely rare, and this mix made the map very popular.

As for architecture, I love that grayish-greenish design of Derelict, it's highly authentic Allen Blum style as well, and the only one that has vibes back to god tier episode 1 and 2. His maps are rarely colorful, and honestly, Duke is always better when it sticks to the classic style shown in those early episodes.

Episode 4 was indeed colourful (except Derelict), but for all the wrong reasons. Those kitschy details everywhere looked vomit inducing, it entirely felt like made by a different company. Episode 5 is even worse, only Golden Carnage, and partly Mirage Barrage (except the outside maze) looked something that belongs to its own game. High Times and the others with those kitschy colours, yeesh.

Too bad, the community never really wanted to recreate Allen Blum's style, they always follow something else, usually try to immitate Doom's gameplay (which doesn't fit will with Duke) combined with episode 4's design style.

>> No.5176546

Episode 4 review:

It's Impossible: I love the thunderstorm, it was awesome back then, and the level has a nice layout and atmosphere, but it had many questionable design elements, like oversized doors and sprites, scatterbrained textures, clueless shading, it was clearly not a product of the people who made the first 3 episodes, it was evident for me even in my first playthrough. Even with these flaws, it's one of the better levels of E4.

Duke Burger: massive kitsch fest inside, but somehow this theme suits well with Duke, and the map is very enjoyable. Clearly the 2nd best level after Derelict.

Shop-n-Bag: huge nosedive here. The theme of the supermarket is spot on, but this place doesn't look like a supermarket, but some cramped, ugly warehouse. Those button puzzles, weird turrets, tanks in cramped areas are all off.

Babe Land: typical episode 4 map, and it's surprisingly ugly for a Blum level. Textures, sounds are all way off, theme doesn't work, gameplay is a mess, one of the worst experiences in the episode.

Pigsty: just one of those kitschy E4 levels with ugly details. Outside areas - like in many other levels in the episode - are non existent, no real car crash here, and the whole level feels highly depressing for all the wrong reasons.

Area 51: It's Impossible 2, but without that level's strengths. Scatterbrained, kitschy texturing again, and layout is bad.

Going Postal: it's more clean, and closer to the style of the classic episodes, probably the 3rd best level of the episode. But somehow it felt lukewarm all around, no interesting moments even with that crazy ending.

XXX Stacy: this starts with typical E4 kitsch, and then turns into an E3 parody after the blue key. It's authentic looking in the second half, but what this place actually wants to be?

Critical Mass: nice journey, design is pretty bad, but loved those explosions. As its own, this is a non level though, more like a setup to Derelict.

Derelict: what had been said. Clearly E4's best.

>> No.5176549

>>5176546
