This game was so good at making a tense and creepy atmosphere. I still remember my heart pounding at this part. They really did an excellent job making the most of the limited GB hardware.

Every 2d metroid game i've played has had this uncanny way of making me feel fear in some way or another (The exception being the first). I may sound crazy, but despite not being as high powered as the later 2d entries, Metroid 2 very much did this to me too. I can remember being fucking teriffied of the omega metroids and running for my life while trying desperately to pump them full of missiles. And the Metroid Queen is a pretty freaky final boss for a Gameboy game.

i would have preferred they zoom out like they did for Super Mario Land 1, but (like most later GB platformers, including the other Mario games) they choose to zoom in to allow for better visuals on a very limited system.
Luckily the game is designed around the viewpoint. Traps and enemies are more spaced-out and slow to react, which mitigates how quickly they appear. You won't be bumping into enemies constantly unless you're terrible at games.

Prime 3 has good level design but the motion controls and added emphasis on action make everything feel a bit less precise in exchange for speed. It leans far more heavily into FPS territory and away from metroidvania style exploration and adventure compared to the previous two.
The main problem is the atmosphere. The plot is in-your-face instead of environmental or optional, and there is a lot of focus on goofy characters and cutscenes that take away from the lonely Metroid feel and replace it with more of a cartoony superhero/sentai tone.
Prime 3 is very good at what it does, but it's bad at doing a lot of what a Metroid game is usually praised for. It could easily go into a higher tier if you don't mind these changes, because it's a genuinely good game.

The issue is that the exact thing that gave it the atmosphere were the reasons the game wasn't very fun to play.
>Ambience was creepy,
BUT
>It was also annoying
>Small zoomed out screen gave you a feeling of clautrophobia
BUT
>It also made it really hard to see ahead of you
>Black backgrounds were eerily empty
BUT
>They were also boring and all areas looked the same
>All corridors were twisted and similar, and something they didn't even follow euclidean geometry
BUT
>This meant a lot of time was spend on wondering where the hell should I go next
>World design was simple and linear with no backtracking so player won't get lost due to complex level design
BUT
>As a result, game doesn't feel as interconnected as it could

Super Metroid is objectively better because they managed to pull off this creepy, dense atmosphere while delivering the game that is fun to play.

Highly agree with you on that. The small screen space makes the fight even more intense, too. Even with full health, it's pretty hard, too, I think. Unless I'm remembering wrong.
>>5170028
I agree with you on all your greentext points, but I still think it does atmosphere better than Super Metroid overall. (Which is a shame, since neither AM2R nor Samus Returns got it right. Still fun, though.)
But I'm mostly thinking of a desolate sort of atmosphere here. Super Metroid does atmosphere well in general, but I like the more cold and bleak atmosphere that Metroid 2 creates, similar to Prime 2 and Fusion, with Dark Aether being the peak of the series in terms of creating a grim and unwelcoming atmosphere, in my opinion.
I don't expect much from Prime 4, but if they can do anything like Prime 1 and 2 did, I'll be a happy boy.

No fuck you for saying this, it's fine to prefer Super better for the reasons you stated, those reasons don't make a game objectively better. There are things Metroid 2 does better than Super like the final boss and creepy atmosphere factor, as well as having different mechanics and it's to the player's discretion which makes for the better gameplay experience, it depends what you value more in a game.

Believing Super is the be-all end-all led to them shitting up the ending in Samus Returns. Shoehorning in the long slogging backtrack and Ridley fight completely eliminated M2's feeling of triumph (at beating the Queen) and wonder (at seeing the egg hatch). Not only did it fuck up the ending, it also steals Super's thunder by shamelessly ripping off its own unique plot elements (Ridley kidnapping the baby Metroid, the Metroid defending its mother).

SR had other problems but the whole ending sequence is why I despise it.
