>You play as John Mayor, a Navy Seal stationed there for security.

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/deep-fear/

Evertime I read HG101, I always find errors. Granted, they're little errors, but it points to the general sloppiness that is rampant at HG101. In Deep Fear, John Mayor is an Ex-Navy Seal, but he's currently part of ERS (Emergency Rescue Services). Subtle difference? Sure. But I suspect the guy who wrote the article just fired the game up in an emulator, and wrote the article. It comes up once in the dialogue, so it's easy to miss. But I've played the game once and even I picked up on it.

What kind of mistakes have you seen in HG101 lately?

>> No.5157910

Don't know if you're trolling but I made the mistake of buying their massive book about point-and-click adventure games. It was all LucasArts fellating and Sierra bashing.

I didn't know I was paying to read some random asshole's personal opinions.

What was it like? Aren't those books just reprints of their web articles?

>> No.5157920

Yeah, it's mostly an anthology of their articles with some interviews sprinkled. It appealed to me as a convenient and tangible reference guide for the genre.

I noticed that some of the articles have been since removed from their new site.

Why, it's Kurt Kalata, creator and head writer of Hardcore Gaming 101, and a proprietor of the rich history of video games.

Anything that's just their opinions isn't worthwhile. I've skimmed (but not paid for) Kalata's P&C book and it's pretty meh, if I were to shell out money on pointless cash-grabs for P&C fans i'd look at the "The Art of Point-and-Click Adventure Games" by the Bitmap Brothers. (it too is just stuff you can probably get yourself online but at least it's pretty)
The Japanese interview books by that bong autist from HGH101 is good stuff though, own copies of all of them in physical format.

RG is so-so, mostly good for the rare interviews or behind the scenes stuff, and has way too much of a spergy love-affair with trash on the Speccy.

>> No.5159015

>>5159012

RG is full on nostalgia bait, but I'm just talking about quality of journalism. I've yet to see RG be wrong about anything. Meanwhile, every time I read a HG101 article on a game I'm familiar with, I always spot errors. Hell, you could write a whole book on HG101 errors.

It's because HG101 hires out freelancers for little pay, who just rush through a game and write something up as quickly as possible. RG has actual committed writers. Glorious Nippon actually has a ton of really great retrospective books and magazines too. Very little online though, all print.

Basically you get what you pay for.

More grammar issues than i can keep track of. Also lots of incorrect factual statements and just plain awful opinions, especially regarding Japan.
I made a thread about them here recently and it was deleted instantly.

https://desuarchive.org/vr/thread/5027626/#5027626

The main thing is that now I dont' think we need HG101 anymore. At a time, they were pretty much the only ones talking about this. But now we have archive projects that are scanning and making old gaming mags available. We have modern magazines like Retro gamer. We have Game Center CX. We have Japanese retrospective books. At this stage we don't really need them anymore, and we can bypass their sloppy scholarship.

I love Segaretro, NECretro, and Sonicretro. Really wish there was a Nintendo Retro to go along with that. I can find reviews and articles for obscure PCE games with ease with NEC Retro, but if it's a Super Famicom title, there's no such guide.

We can research games, and just add the info directly to Wikipedia. We're kind of in a retro gaming scholarship rennaisance.

>> No.5159909

>>5159560

Actually, I'm reading more pages and they seem accurate. It really depends on the writer. Some people are deeply passionate about the titles, and know everything about it. Others are just rushing through the game on fast forward to get enough material to write.

Since it's Korean gaming, I'm gonna guess it's mostly accurate with some errors.

It's not everyday you'll see an author interject such self-insert subjective opinions about an editorial piece based on an retro game. He ability to really portray a deep and rich complexity into such a written piece really speaks of his desire to be recognised as ab intelligence authornof careful though and consideration. The way he weaves a rich trapestry of narrative based on not only the plot, setting and atmosphere of the interactice media, but also the gameplay and how it subtly contributes to the complex plot of the game is simply admirable.
