The d-pad is terrible. If you must have a 6-button controller, get an Avenue Pad 6 or the Hori one. Almost nothing uses the extra buttons though, so it's kind of pointless.

Which one? Pic related is the one I use most of the time. Feels the same as the normal 2-button controllers but has an extra button that can be mapped to run or select.

I love PC Engine! It’s fun. But if I didn’t have any gaming consoles it would be near the bottom of my list of ones to get into. And $300 is a lot to spend on a system with such a hit or miss gaming library.

What’s the best platformer on it? Bonk, maybe? Dracula X? Legendary Axe? Best shooter is, what do we agree on around here? Lords of Thunder, Soldier Blade? I’m sure you can name dozens of titles on SNES or Megadrive that are better. RPG’s? Theirs nothing on the system better than Draqon Quest, Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star, weather you can read Japanese or not. It’s just kind of a second tier system. It had some good arcade ports at the time but nothing anyone who’s downloaded MAME would spend a dime on.

I paid 230 for my duo but it needed a recap and i also had to replace my laser. R and RX are supposedly much more reliable.

Great if you like PCE games and also have an Everdrive. The PCE CD/Turbo CD is one of the more picky consoles in terms of CD-R quality and write speed, but if you can get it to read burned games reliably, you can have the entire PCE/TG16 library available to you for a few hundred dollars.

Looking at that picture I finally got something. The interface unit is meant to match the blue Core Grafx I. (Who knows why they didn’t offer a black CD-ROM2 to match?) and the Super CD-ROM was to match the orange Core Grafx II. Mind blown!

Was there ever a white interface unit to match with the original white PC Engine. Or was the Core Grafx the only one being produced then?

No, that’s not the point I was making. I agree. It’s a pricey 8-bit system. And it doesn’t live up to the hype. I had a TurboDUO back in the day, and I could never shake sort of a sense of buyers remorse. I had Lords of Thunder and Cotton, Ys, Cosmic Fantasy, good games right? Exotic CD games. Wow! But kind of a letdown. Nothing on that system was better than Super Mario World or Gunstar Heroes, or Secret of Mana, nothing.

PCE is literally known for having the best library of shooters that generation. There isn’t any comparison.

And yes there are RPGs on it that do match up, especially if you’re using fucking dragon quest as a baseline
