Talk about Alleyway.

Always preferred Side Streets myself

Pretty cool for an 80s Game Boy title but nothing really special today.

It's a Mario game.

Was lame in 1989 and is still lame today

Jeremy Parish said it best: the first few rounds of Gameboy games were meant to flush out the system. We need a shooter (ok, Solar Striker) or we need some arcade games (ok, alleyway, etc)

At this point alleyway is such a basic game that it's probably not worth playing it on Gameboy unless you specifically really like Alleyway games and their different permutations, or just Gameboy history in particular.

Is this one of Nintendo's most blatant rip-offs?

Mostly Nintendo was pretty innovative back in the day, but this game is a straight up Breakout clone.

No. Nintendo started out making breakout clones.

Sad note. Alex Kidd and the Monkey now share a low income apartment in Sendai.

Ha, I never saw that one. It's actually an interesting spin on the breakout concept. Breakout didn't do much except scroll the blocks.

Alleyway was an acceptable launch title, but the physics of the game is noticeably primitive and limited.

Dragon Dance is the patrician's choice for handheld ball n' paddle.

Tons of big Japanese game companies from the 80s or 90s started out in games making breakout clones or space invaders clones.

I remember seeing concept art of this and it was a dude flying that tube thing in space and bouncing that ball to hit blocks.

If he was in space what the fuck was he even breaking blocks for? What happened to the balls that he lost?
