Was it really that bad?

It's on the SNES but plays like an NES RPG, is one big fetch quest and has a very generic story though there was a twist here that got me, actually.
The soundtrack isn't terribly memorable, either, so what's even left?

I remember the character dialogue being cute and the translation being extremely high quality for the time.

I found it completely forgettable.

If you can stomach the encounter rate. In this game, it's not even like you really need to carefully manage your resources or anything, which just makes them a nuisance. Not being able to focus down individual enemies is a cherry on top.
Lufia 1 is not the worst game I've played, but I have no desire to go back to it between the annoyances it has and how relatively unremarkable story, characters and the OST were.

>> No.5144963

I played it for a bit but you get into tedious fights like every three steps and fuck that.

I tried playing it back in 2004 after I had beaten Lufia 2. I made it to a part where I had to build a bridge and then I stopped playing for a couple days and forgot where to go and it got too frustrating with the random battles. I now have a romcart with the hack for lufia 1 that makes your speed faster and lowers the encounter rate. I am hoping to try it out sometime soon.

I love Lufia 2 and it does everything so perfectly that I feel I will always be disappointed when playing other turn based RPGs.

I read the critics saying it's boring and the battles are easy, with the most interesting thing being the puzzles.

The battles can be boring but I remember having a lot of fun, especially because it's not random encounters and you can sneak up on enemies. You also have 'animal' partners that can help you and leveling them up by feeding them items is a lot of fun.

The puzzles are pretty awesome but some are really difficult and you might need a guide. You also have Game+ mode that gives you x2 exp+gold which is really helpful for Killing the boss that you normally lose to in the begining of the game and you have the ancient cave which is like an entirely new game and takes a few hours to complete.

I would say Lufia 2 and SMRPG are my favorite SNES rpg games and maybe even my favorite games.

You have a Limit Break-ish bar that builds up as you take damage. That's the most interesting aspect of battles.

I was really pissed off that there was no final boss. Just the same four sinistrals you already fought before, just as easy, with no new music or anything, then credits.

Good thing there's a romhack to make it hard as balls.

It's bland as shit. The only thing notable about it is that the very first thing you do in the game is save the world.

this and the fact that the last dungeons (3 towers + the final one) are boring shit, 0 puzzle and very linear
Did they run out of time to finish the game or something?

It's a slog to play, the walking speed alone is enough to make you pull your hair out

Everything about Doom Island was cool, and I loved it whenever it reappeared in the other games.

I also liked the artstyle and the saucy dialogue.

There's a patch that fixes that.

yeah I forgot about that. This was a big let down in Lufia 2. Every boss fight up until then is pretty awesome. I never beat the first game so the ending of the 2nd game didn't mean anything to me lol.
