werebear if you want to be tankier, they generally go with slower, high damaging weapons if they go Maul skill. IK weapon is decent here.

Vanilla is good, but may not run easily on modern PCs.
I like Belzebub a lot, but mind also that I'm a person who played Diablo a lot over two decades, and I've seen all there is to possibly see in the original game.
Belzebub adds a lot of neat new content, most of it made from unused Beta/Alpha content, something which Hellfire also did, except done FAR better, and without being a broken mess.

It is not for everyone, however.

>> No.5145207

>>5144007
>oc donut steele modifications
Large amounts of this was things which was scrapped in the original game's development, then either recycled for Hellfire, or reused for Diablo 2. It overall does a much better job with the assets than Synergistic Software did, and it's different enough from what Diablo 2 did with the same ideas that I find it neat and refreshing enough.

>then again, I'm very critical of mods in general.
Well yeah, then its really not for you.
I'll say that just a basic Windows 10 compatible port of Diablo with resolution options, and no new fancy things, would be nice to have.

>just ignore everything else about Hellfire
As flawed as Hellfire is, I do like a FEW of the new things.
The new music was cool, the hive would probably be pretty neat if you switched out most of the enemies, and the crypt tileset could probably be used for something neat if you made it generate in a new way, instead of just recycling the church layout algorithms but with less things in it.

I fucking hate that unique items are impossible to find though, that's an inexcusable bug.

If the game runs for you, then I don't think you really need any mods, the base game is pretty solid as is, though some mods could be interesting to check out at a later time, depending on what you like.

Some beginner's advice:
>neon yellow zombies permanently steal one HP from you with every successful hit, the game doesn't tell you this, and you will never get them back, avoid melee with these guys at any cost
>shrines vary dramatically in what they do, either doing something nice for you, or something particularly cruel, I'd recommend making a save before touching a shrine, to see what it actually does, then examining your stats, item conditions, and spell levels
>keep an eye on equipment durability, if it runs out, the item breaks and is gone forever
>powerful late game spells like Chain Lightning can be an absolute lifesaver, and just a good and powerful attack in general, but mind that the vanilla game has a limit for 255 sprites on screen at a time, so if there's too many items and decorations/bodies/projectiles on screen, you may find that you won't get the full (if any) effect from some spells in an absolute emergency of trying to save yourself from a horde of monsters

>> No.5145265

>>5145217
Belzebub is recommended mostly for qol improvements. Walking at turtle speed in tristram, looting being a pain because of no object highlighting and 24fps can get old
Also belzebub adds some cut content like a butcher cutscene and cut quests. Shareable stash is pretty nice too

>> No.5145282

Honestly it's a lot more than just quality of life improvements (though the storage, the larger gold stacks, and being able to carry a backup weapon setup, that shit is extremely nice to have).
I'd almost call it "Diablo 1 And A Half". For someone who always felt Diablo 1 had a much better atmosphere and visual style than 2 (which I do still like), it's a very nice compromise for me.

fun fact and a commonly known exploit: if you're capable of abusing Mana Shield (e.g. be a Sorcerer) you can use Black Death's life steal attack to set your max HP to 1, and when you have Mana Shield on, the game thinks every attack should kill you, so it doesn't bother rendering you getting hit, so in effect you can never be put in a stunlock. The behavior acts like either Fastest Hit Recovery or even better.

Its about them not giving a damn about their fans.

Its about them taking a hot shit over their fans, that pay money to go to an event only to hear news about Blizz games.

And its the sentiment that they really don't need to do any of that. They can make the f***ing mobile game without the Diablo Skin and still make a shitload of money. They just chose to take a crap on owr memories on the way there, just for the lulz.

Yeah, if their new game is so good (but it's not), they could release it under its own IP instead of ruining the memory and artstyle of such an amazing franchise. This is true for Diablo 3 too, god I can't stomach that awful WoW artstyle. They should have made it as a warcraft dungeon crawling game, it would have respected the artstyle and even rekindled the warcraft IP.

Instead, what they do is make a mediocre uninspired game no one will remember or care about in 5 years, and call it diablo, because look guys, this is diablo, diablo is good.

I tried Diablo 1 and never finished it because i got bored

I tried Torchlight 1 or 2 and never finished it because it was repetitive and boring

Is Diablo 2 the answer?

Judging by your enjoymeny of those games, I would say it is probably your last option.
Or you just don't like the genre.

it's okay to not enjoy arpgs anon, try something else.
if you need something primarily concerned with hack and slash that plays differently, try divine divinity or icewind dale

I'm the opposite - really liked Diablo, for how simple and atmospheric it is. Replayed it several times. But finished Diablo 2 only once, and dropped every singke non-retro arpg looter. So there is chance that you might like 2 more.

i used to like them as i kid but i kinda find loot based RPGs kinda boring now.

fallout 4 & the division were probably the first ones i liked in a long time and that was more because of the world space than anything else.

The base game was shit, but Reaper of Souls was actually fucking good.

If you played RoS, it was almost as good as D2. Problem is, first D3 team (led by Jay Wilson) fucked the game's launch so badly that everything after 2012 flew in completely under the radar. Very few Diablo fans know Reaper of Souls even exists.

i agree with you, D3 was good for exactly one playthrough and i couldnt manage to get through the game again with different characters

but probably a year after RoS release i played again, and it was actually fuckin playable

the environments for RoS were much closer to D2 in feel and atmosphere, and the demons and undead felt less like wildlife and more like the unnatural threat they were supposed to be
