What game made you think "woah, in what beautiful scenery i'm moving through" for the first time ? For me, it was abe's oddysee

That one. Watching the sun set through the haze as you slip out of the stockyards... strong vidya memory.

Was sad when early 3D games were the rage, was rare to come across quality imagery at that point.

Very meme, but it was probably Flashback.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (PC) made me few times tilt my head in anticipation of looking under certain places, forgetting I'm watching a 3D game and instead getting immersed into thinking I'm watching a real deal.
And then I started to consider that game butt-ugly around mid 00s.

if "beautiful" specifically - then SMW on SNES.
if "awesome" then descent on PC

Probably same as me. I think the artwork in the first 2 games is some of the best and most imaginative in vg. I have the art of oddworld book at home, absolutely beautiful.
God damn did New and Tasty suck.

I've posted it before, but I found the savanna in JP Rampage edition breathtaking. The whole game looks pretty good, but the amount of scrolling in the background is really something.

Reaching high ground in many JRPG's on the SNES back in the 90s was always really nice. Seeing the parallax scrolling mountains or forests in the background as you slowly ascend an incline or a tower was always awesome.
Barren Falls in FF6 was always really beautiful up at the top.

Also the fan game for Sonic 2 HD is pretty close to re-living that feeling.

There are dozens of locations from Monkey Island 2 worth of mentioning; pic related, Woodtick, Scabb Island in general; some places in Phatt Island too. For the first chapter there's plenty of nice landscapes, generally from Melee Island but not necessarily.
Related soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GkcuBfdgcQ (too bad there isn't a true version of this on YouTube, but that's probably due to the astonishing work of the iMUSE engine)

Same. This game is one of the few where the "kino" meme applies. Each location was so distinctly unique and gorgeous in its own way.

I remember comparisons between the original Abe and New n Tasty and how locations in the original still look great but the remake is just soulless

World of illusion starring mickey mouse and donald duck on 16bit sega. Its absolutely gorgeous. And the art on every level is so different and the music is just as good. Its not a difficult game by any means but its so comfy and the asthetics of each level are beautiful

Looks disgusting. I don't know what it is with these kind of HD remakes, but making everything so smooth and polished makes them look like some shitty browser or mobile games. Same thing with the short tech demo type HD showcases made of ganes with pre-rendered sprites, like DKC. It just looks off-putting when at a "too high" resolution.

Shit's weird - I don't get the hate boner some people seem to have against any and all kinds of filters on emulators, but it's these kind of too glossy HD remakes that irk me...

The first one was either Tusker or Myth's stormy boat level on the c64. Even though with Myth they fooled me at first with the good old "let's show amiga screenshots for our c64 game" trick.

This is called parallax scrolling (as post #2 mentions), and I'm a big fan of it too. That is a very nice background.

>>5143937
Art of Oddworld? That would be amazing, their concept artists were right on the money.

>>5143937
>>5145919
Yeah, I saw the Matthewmatosis comparison. When I first heard it was going to be non-screen-scrolling, I knew there was no way it could turn out as good as the original... but soulless is definitely the way to describe it.

I felt the same way about Munch's Oddysee actually, and had to put it down pretty fast. Didn't care much for Stranger's Wrath either, although it tried a little bit harder.

I wish they had just made a polished sequel with a slightly improved engine (wouldn't have to be Abe, just the same content and even better art).

I'm young, so the first I can really think of that blew me away are Smash Bros. Melee and Metroid Prime. I don't remember caring about graphics much as a kid though, in fact it was more recently I think that games started to wow me visually, old, new, or otherwise. I just never paid much attention before. Maybe because my first systems from very early age were Game Boy, SNES, Genesis, and N64, I was just used to a lot of different visual types from a young age. Don't know for sure.

Now that I think more on it, the Ganon fight in Ocarina of Time made a big impression.
