Barthandelus and Orphan are lesser gods (Fal’Cie) that curse you to carry out a mission. Fail you become a monster, succeed you become a crystal. Yay. But they don't tell you what the mission is because that would make the game short. So the writers contrive reasons for you run around like a blind dumb ass fighting irrelevant nobodies for no reason 90% of the game, until eventually you decide you're just going to kill the Fal’Cie.

Turns out that's what the Fal'Cie actually want the whole time! But they're still going to fight you and try to stop you LOL. They want you to kill them so the above ground world will crash into the world below and kill everyone, creating a soul portal to the big mommy god.

They tell you their plan for no reason, which is dumb because they know you don't want that to happen. Surely knowing this plan you wouldn't kill them right? Nope. You say fuck it and just kill them anyway for LOL. To recap, they want you to kill them, but resist anyway. You don't want them to die, but kill them anyway. Derp. They then contrive a ridiculous way to kill baby god and still hold up the upper world with a large pillar.

Final Fantasy has always been convoluted, but that's part of the fun. 13 is just stupid however; it's obvious they lazily made it up as they went. The story doesn't work without an uncountable number of contrivances. The drama between the characters only exists because nobody acts like a real person. They could clear up the misunderstandings between eachother in seconds if they just talked to eachother instead of stopping themselves mid-sentence and running away.


The battle system is mindlessly repetitive. The real problem with auto-battle is that it works at all; enemies require no more strategy than: Use corresponding elemental strike, switch to sentinel before the clearly teligraphed heavy attack, switch to heal mode when health low. Wow. FF Tactics has nothing on this. /s
